i was driving home on the freeway. there's 4 lanes. 2 of the right most lanes were slow. i was merging onto the 2nd most lane and i bumped this accord in front of me. it wasn't even a hard bump. more like a nudge. the guy looked back and it looks like he was worried i dented him or something. we both didnt get out cuz there was fast traffic on the lane next to the drivers door side. so we kept driving. i was behind him for another half a mile and i notice he had a dent on his left portion of his rear bumper. but i know i didnt cause that dent cuz i bumped him when i was merging in from the right. so when i bumped him, i hit the right side of his bumper there's no way i could have caused that dent on the left. so i followed him a bit and i eventually changed to the left lane and passed him. he immediately changed and followed me for a bit. it looks like he was getting my plates. after 1-2 miles, he changed to another lane and sped off. now i'm worried he might intentionally or unintentionally thought i caused that dent. would he have a case? i'm worried he might come after me and said i hit and ran after causing that dent that was already there.

btw i checked my car and my front bumper has no dents. i do have a crapload of paint chipping from my bumper though. but this has been occuring for awhile and is on the entire bumper.

advice? yes, he might contact you, and it would be your word against his.

I bet nothing will come of it. Like caramel said, your work against his. You better start working on your alibi just in case... ;)

edit: I think you would win. I mean, if I had a dent on my car, why not just find some car with damage on the front end and claim he caused it? I don't think I would get any money or anything out of that.

so if i do get contacted about this incident, what would be the best way to go about it? lie that i wasn't even there and risk getting caught? that would totally discredit anything else i'd have to say. or should i just admit that it happened but there's really no way i caused that dent?

if it came down to anything, his car would be inspected to see if the dent had any paint chipping the same as your colour car. and also match any damage on your front bumper to the location on his bumper. if your car has no dents, fine. don't get too worked up over this because he might not contact you, and if he does contact you, he might be a nice guy.

Unless I'm reading wrong, it soulds like the accident was your fault. You should have pulled over as quickly as you were able to. If they find any of his paint on your car, you may get a hit-and-run from this.

1) I'd have never gotten in front of him so he couldn't have gotten my plate #
2) You have to hit a plastic bumper fairly hard to put a dent in it. Even then, esp. when it's warm, it will pop back out.

if he never tried to pull over, or waved to you signaling he was trying to pull over, nothing should come of it, it probably would have been best to stay behind him to see what he was going to do though

It was up to him to pull over so you could follow him. He didn't. You did nothing illegal. If you should be contacted by him or his insurance company, which I doubt you will be, just say, "To the best of my knowledge I have never been involved in an automobile accident." End of story. Nobody can prove anything.
