Need advice on evga step-up

So, by my calculations, My step up period is rapily coming to a close... I bought my card on April 13th, so i've got until July 11th.

Currently I have a 7900gt co, which i bought at full retail ($319... oy.) So, whaddya think, should I go all out for a GX2? I was thinking that maybe it might be a good idea... last me a while, and when the price has decreased significantly i could add another, but on the other hand cash is a bit low at the moment.

I guess my questions are:

1. Which card should I go for, or should i not step-up at all?

2. If i go for the GX2, how long will it tide me over for? If I enentually bought another and used both in SLI, how long would that last me for? (I do game, no FPS, but i love oblivion, guild wars, civ4, and i'm really looking forward to spore. I am also a scenic designer, so I use maya, photoshop, vectorworks (CAD), and flash a lot)

3. If the MSRP drops or something else comes out while my step-up is on backorder, does evga allow changes?

4. Anyone wanna give me a couple hundred bucks?

5. Anything other suggestions? Anything else I should know?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'm currently on a dell 2007wfp, but i might move to a 2407 in the fall.

1. Personally, I wouldn't step-up at all. If you want some more speed, you could try voltage-modding your current card and get it close to GTX speeds. Your money would be better spent on a good after-market HS/F (30-40 bucks).

2. Really tough to say for sure. As far as you going SLI, I would never count on it. By the time it becomes economical, a new generation of cards (DX10) will be coming out. The whole "buy one now and then SLI when the cards come down in price" line is just a marketing gimmick.

3. Only if your original 90 days is not up.

4. I would, but then my wife would kill me 😛

1. I'm not very comfortable with overclocking my video card... as i see it, overclocking is for those who can afford a shorter lifespan for their card... i don't think i'm one of those yet.

2. That's a good point... when are DX10 cards expected? Dangit... i should have waited till now to get my 7900gt

That might not seem important to you, but all of my old equipment goes into other computers, often family members, and i don't need to deal with that.

You think a GX2 with two GPU's mounted on a single card to become an overheated monstrosity will last you many years? Please.

I'm not sure whether you should upgrade or not... but I'm working on a step-up for a 7900 GT. Bought my 7600 GT on 4/7 and I've got until 7/7 to step up, so I'm in the process of doing that. Going up to a 7900 GT CO, and I just wanted to say, I've been in queue #8 since June 8th... not fun. I called eVGA and they told me they're expecting another shipment of 7900s later this week, so it should be this week. Take that for what it's worth, but personally I'd say not to upgrade, since you'd be paying nearly double the price of your card, for probably not even double the performance. I'd stay weary of that... although you may consider getting the next higher up model, like a Superclocked edition of the 7900 GT.
