I am an accountant and currently make 38k/year. I really like where I work. The office is casual and everyone I work with including my boss is really cool and easy going.

I have just been offered a position at another company making 54k/year. The hours will be alot longer even come in on Saturday's sometimes and the boss seems kind of like a dick. I was offered the position today and said he wanted an answer today. I told him I needed tonight to think it over.

What should I do?

Update:

I called the company that offered me 54 and said thanks but no thanks. I spoke to my current boss and got a raise to 45k.

It is probably not the answer you want, but I think I would take the $54k job with the plans of sticking it out for about a year, then find a NEW job paying an equivalent amount.

...or talk to your current employer and ask if they can counter-offer.

I wouldn't take the new job. On the other hand, 38k seems low for being an accoutant.

Take the $54k job, put up with the nonsense while you gain that resume fodder, and then 6 months down the line start your search for a better job that pays around $54k or more.

Would a year at the 54k job be any better for your resume than a year at the 38k job?

That's what I'd do.

Asking for time to think it over is fine. don't be bullied around. Now is your time to negotiate. I would personally be offended if a potential employer said they needed an answer the same day as the what I'm assuming is a verbal offer. So offended that I would tell them to shove it.

Don't be bullied into a decision. It is your career. you control it.

I would talk with your current employer about receiving a raise. It sounds like you enjoy your current position, workplace culture and that is most important! Tell your boss that you want to stay, but have received other offers for considerably more.

That all said....38k seems rather low for an accountant unless you live in the middle of nowhere

I should have gotten a raise one months ago. My boss said after they had their meeting I should receive one. Never heard about it again since.
I am currently working as a Staff Accountant. The new position would be for a senior accountant. I currently work 40 hour work weeks. The new place said it would be more including ocasional Saturday's. I would rather stay with my current employer but I am not sure how to go about asking for a raise. This is my first job out of college and I have been there for about 1 year and 3 months.

putting the pay aside..will this new job offer you better experience?
will you leanr things that you will not learn at your new jobs....you need to decide if the new job will open doors for you (experience, networking, new skills, etc) than at your present job..

you might like your job right now but if your stagnant it is hurting your career in the long run

I am currently working on becoming a CPA. WIthin a year I will be a CPA so my poisition and qualifications will be changing soon. I am learning alot at my current company but the growth potential is limited because it is a small company.

How many more hours are we talking about? If you''ll be required to work 50 hours a week your raise comes out to ~ $2.50 /hr Trow in an eight-hour Saturday, and you're making the same.

He didn't specify but he laughed when I told him I currently work 40 hour work weeks and said this position is definitely not one of those.

Well, you just may end up making less money then you're making right now. Work athmosphere should not be discounted either. If I were you, I'd concentrate on getting your CPA before making a big move. I'd still discuss with your current boss and see what he has to say.

I was thinking exactly what you wrote. Maybe I shouldn't make the big move until after I became a CPA. The hours are convenient and they give me ample opportunity prepare for it. How do I approach my boss to ask for a raise. I don't want to come off as greedy but I know I am being paid below market value right now.

I think the biggest factor is if you can still prepare for the CPA in a job working all those extra hours.

Are you a type A personality willing to work the 11 hour days at the fast pace this new position will require?

This is an excellent opportunity for you if you are willing to do the work.
You will learn a lot, meet many people, make many contacts, and if you do well you will be in a position where other people will see how you work and may make you offers to work for them.

This is an excellent opporunity to learn what you need to know about your field to be considered as a professional accountant instead of a bookkeeper.

54K is about starting salary for a top tier student with a Master's Degree on track to take and pass the CPA exam at PWC. This position would get you in the door for more opportunities.

I hate long hours and would avoid it if possible. I like to put in my 40 and go home. I want more money though and I know I am being under paid market value. I want to ask my current employer for a raise but I am not sure how without looking greedy.

Tell him that you were contacted by a company who you applied to the same time you applied with them. It's a common practice to retain resume's for up to a year for qualified applicants.

If you're fine with your 38k salary in terms of living comfortably, saving up for retirement, etc., then stay where you are and keep working torwards your CPA. Obviously your opportunities increase greatly will when you get that.

If you need / want the extra money and are willing to stick with nothing but working long hours and coming home late, then go for the new job. As someone said before, you also have to value how much your study time for the CPA matters.

Perhaps you could give us more info about your situation? Single? Kids? etc.
