Need advice on CPU for multipurpose server

Which cpu should I get and why, for a server which will run vmware and probably pleanty of other apps. The budget is low; only around 200-250max.

If that's your budget for the entire system, then see if you can find a used P3 Celeron. If that's your budget for just the processor, use an E6400.

Well he asked about VMware (which can be a beast) so I'd say get at least an E6300.

get the intel core 2 duo E6400 fits nicely in ur budget and will perform well.

does anyone know what is the difference between E6400 and XEON 3050??
The spec of both proc appear the same but one of them is a xeon and cost $30 more.
