* yea I know there was recently a thread on converting to divx, but right now I have separate questions/issues on Divx

Well anyways I want to be able to play movie's on my laptop so I'm thinking of converting my entire DVD collection into DIVX. I've never done this before so I could use some advice. 1st off, I've been hearing of 3ivx's debute and that divx2 will be out soon so should I just wait? I dowloaded teh 3ivx software, but it was just a decoder. Does anyone know of a 3ivx encoder to convert my DVD's with? If not, which encoder offers the best quality? I don't really care about speed, I just want the best quality picture and sound. What should the optimal settings for best quality? Size doesn't matter much, but they obviously do since I can't afford the space for full 4-5GB rips. I want to keep it at least under 2GB's suffering the least amount of quality loss. If it matters, here are my system specs:
P3 800EB
384MB CRUCIAL CL2 PC133 RAM
2 Maxtor DiamondMax 40 Plus ATA100 7200RPM hard drives (not on raid)

I keep getting the window that says "Waiting for 'ICCompressorChoose' window" each time I start ripping. Why does that happen?

firstly, here is a good site. you can download everything from there, and i'm sure there are tutorials/info there as well.

get a program like DVD Speed Ripper to rip the DVD and then encode it with FlaskMPEG. Lots of experimenting needs to be done to find the best quality/size/performance ratio but you don't really care about the size, so assuming your laptop is powerful, you could encode movies at the full original resolution of 720x480. Use the low-motion DivX codec and put sharpness to about 70%. Use HQ Bicubic filtering when preserving your widescreen, I usually encode at 25fps... and i suggest encoding the sound to 192Kbps MP3 format. (you will find all these settings in the program)

yea... I downloaded EVERYTHING that I need according to the guides and I couldn't get it to work... even start. I can't open "Output format options" in flask mpeg and choose how and with what I want to encode with... what gives, I installed the dixvx 3.11 alpha encoder and the RA mp3 codec as the guide said to do and still nothing!

OK, I'll chip in. To get to choose output format/codecs etc. you have to have the files loaded first. Load the DVDs .IFO file or the .vob itself, select the tracks you need and then work with the formats.
