Hey I was debating wether or not to buy the 7800gt.

Right now i've got an lcd screen that runs a max of 1280by1024. Am i buying way too much power for the next few years if i run at this resolution? If so whats the best card for hte next few years while staying in this resolution range? thanks in advance.

Heck a Ti4200 will last a few years haha. If I am interpreting you correctly, you want a card that will run close to max settings for a few years. I would say that it is impossible and no card would suit your needs. Just look @ past examples of top of the line cards Voodoo, Ti4200, 9800pro, x800pro. The Voodoo was made in 1996-2000. Voodoo 5, which is ancient technology by today's standards and uses AGP2x was made only 5 years ago! I'd advise you to look up the numerous threads on the 7800GT and look at the numerous site reviews to determine your needs.

at 1280x1024 ur better suited...with a a card from the 6xxx series from nvidia(6600GT,6800GT,etc)...or a sumthim like a X800XL from ATI...imo the 7800GT isn't worth it if you dont have a good monitor

X850 XT PE nearly matches a 7800GTX at that res, I think. Not positive I'm remembering the review I read comparing the products :D And you can find one used for around ~350

With an x800xl I can run that resolution with everything maxed in all games, but I can't pull that off in BF2/F.E.A.R and any future games. If you wanna enjoy the games right now at that resolution and max settings(or near max), x800xl or 6800GT is the way to go, but if you wanna be safe, wait for ATI's new lineup to lower the 7800GT/X prices and go for them then.

The 7800gt will be the best for a few years. SM3, faster than x850, more pipes, etc etc.

What are you talking about? Firstly, the best is 7800GTX. Secondly, in at most 6 months-1 year Nvidia will launch some other line of products that are superior to the 7 series.
