Columbia ski jacket, or The North Face ski jackets.

Both are excellent quality. Price $200-$500

Please whatever ya do, DON'T BUY A TOMMY JACKET. Every person I see any more is wearing one.

If you want something a little dressier, London Fog always has a nice selection. Excellent quality and a reasonable price.

Cutting armholes in a blanket works well on a budget, and looks just tacky and cheap enough to make you fit in with the rednecks in my area.

Columbia. By far the best jackets I've ever owned. Personally I'd suggest something longer than ski length. I should know, I live in Wisconsin.

<< Columbia. By far the best jackets I've ever owned. >>

Er...not the best ones I've had. I prefer my current Mountain Hardwear shell to any Columbia I've owned, no contest. North Face, Marmot, Patagonia, Arc'Teryx, and Cloudveil also make some sweet stuff.

I also suggest something longer than waist (what some call "jacket") length. Mid thigh ("parka" length) is much better.

do not buy a banana republic jacket. they are worthless and won't do jakc against the cold. they will only let you look pretty. get a nice warm jacket. splurge a little and i would recommend ski/snow sports related jackets. leather will not keep you warm when its below freezing and there is a 30 mph wind blowing at you.

i would second napalm's advice. get a parka length coat and get one of those brands he lists. but don't rule out columbia totally. moutain hardware is the best brand out of all of those though, and the most expensive.

Reasonably priced jackets

Go to gear.com and look at the jackets there - North Face, Columbia, etc. for decent prices. Also, they've got great prices on Merrell and other hiking boots that you'll NEED in cold/icy/snowy weather. Money may be no object, but it's silly to just toss it away. :p

One word: Goretex.

Seriously....Goretex.....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA:D

*calming down* I like Columbia...very warm and extremely light. Waterproofage too!

Edit: Wow, I didn't know so many liked Columbia. Columbia ROCKS!!!!!

Eddie Bauer has some good jackets. One I have from them is fleece-lined with a Goretex shell. :)

I prefer to have the shell and fleece layer separate - that way you can wear each separately according to weather conditions.

Last time I checked, Columbia didn't use Goretex at all. They use their own laminates/coatings.
