A Medium Sized company wit 2 servers is looking for a backup solution for there network. They want it to be as painless as possible and at the same time quick. They have approximately 4 GB of database files that need backing up on each server and 3 GB of applications and operating system.

Discuss
- Type of backups and timing
- Software that will be used
- Media that will be used and how it will be managed

There are a variety of tape drives out there, have a look at www.mwave.com for some affordable Seagates you could use with the aforementioned software. Factor in a suitable SCSI card ($90 to $180) and the extra tapes you'll need.

Strategy-wise, how about doing a nightly full backup and rotating at least one day's tape off-site to guard against catastrophe, preferably in a safe-deposit box in a nearby bank or something.

Welcome to the forums :)

Does the Veritas software support a duel server network with 4 GB of database files and GB of applications and operating system? Can someone also state the advantges Veritas has over other backup software? I have to present this in a proposal to my boss. :Q

What operating system are your servers running, before we get too much further here? Backup Exec will back up whatever files you specify, as long as there's room on the tape and sufficient time to complete the job. 7Gb of data is going to fit just fine on even a small-ish tape drive.

Go with a DLT 7000 or 8000, and use the software that comes with 2000. (works OK)

I will tell you this, I use Arcserve (because I have to). It is crap, and so is its support. Considder it a vote for Veritas just becuase Arcserve sucks so much. Also, I beleive that MS uses Veritas based code for their backup, but I could be wrong on that one.

I am forced to use Arcserve on one of my servers and it sucks A$$ BAD!!!!

Upgrading my ERP system which will include an Oracle Database and ordered the Veritas with it, altho I have not even set up the server yet. I heard Veritas was VERY good. Anything is better then Arcserve as far as I am concerned

for veritas backup exec, you will need the core software + open file option and database agent

w/o the agent, you can't backup, assuming, sql db. w/o OFO, files that are open are backup under non-consistency state - may not be recoverable.

Veritas isn't bad, I been using it.. CA has their Arcit Backup but I heard it's a bitch to setup.

BTW what is ur backup plan ?

ie my backup plan, 80 gigs -
SQL DB 3 GB, compress to around 2 GB, 3x FULL Daily
Full backup beginning of each month,
Increment backup for 2 weeks
Full backup mid month,
Increment backup for 2 more weeks

I'm using Novanet 8.5 here for Linux (also available for netware & windows servers), and it seems to be a nice piece of software, and cheaper then Veritas pos backupexec (I've had a ton of problems with Backupexec on the 21 or so servers we have running it).

I would use veritas 8.6, it is both easy to use and very powerful. There is a new version 9.0, but it is a little buggy.

We just have a single file server and use Arcserve 2000 and open file agent backing up to an Onstream tape drive. I hate it! Not for backup because it does back up, but rather for the pain in the a&s it is. I set up RAID mirror and do a nightly backup to a USB drive and depend very little on Arcserve.
