Need advice on AMD upgrade

Hi guys. I'm new to OCing so I wanted to get some advice. I'm planning on ordering 3200+(Venice) CPU and MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM motherboard within the next 2 weeks. This is what my current setup looks like:

P4 2.53 OCed to 2.85
Gigabyte GA-8SG667
1gb ram 1 512 stick PC2700 generic 1 512 stick 3200 crucial
Enermax 460 watt PSU
ATI 9800 Pro 8x APG
4 90mm case fans and 1 120mm case fan
DVD-ROM and DVD-RW
SB Live 5.1

I know my video card isn't the greatest but i've never had the latest and greatest so i'm not to concerned about PCI-E right now. I've been told this mobo and CPU over clock well together so i'm wondering if I need to order anything else as far as cooling since I plan to OC it some?

I also want to OC my 9800 pro. I've been able increase the core from 378 to 393 and the memory from 338 to 348. I think my current motherboard is holding it back some since I've read that people have been able to increase the core to 430, but since I can't increase the voltage I can't get it past 393 without it crashing on me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

O/cing the core of a 9800 PRO to 430 isnt common, in fact if you aren't careful you can damage the card quite quickly. Upping the voltage will seldomly help o/cing the card, it just increases the risk of damage. I am running an A64 3200 @2.5Ghz with my 9800 AIW PRO running @ 411/371, and my current MB overvolts the AGP slot by .5V. I am using an Artic Cooling VGA Silencer in place of the stock cooler. I would download and run ATI Tool, as it will help you find the max o/c for your card.

Thanks for the advice. The temps are ok, I haven't see it over 54c and I haven't increased the core over 393. How long does it take ATI tool to find the max for my card? I plan on getting something for my card, what about your CPU? Do just have the retail HSF or something else? Thanks for your advice.

Looks good, I would suggest replacing the PC2700 stick with another matching PC3200 stick so that you can take advantage of the A64's dual channel memory controller.

save $50 and get a 3000+ Venice if you're going to overclock it anyway. GuitarDaddy is right about the memory, 2X512 of pc3200 will keep you happy. you don't need OCZ Platinum, value series ram will work just as well.

He has an AGP 9800 Pro he doesn't want to replace.

Which is quite fine, since the Neo2 + Venice 3200+ = great OCing combo.

Thanks guys. I'll order up another stick of 512mb 3200 Crucial as well. Yes, MBrown, I want to keep my 9800 Pro so PCI-E will have to wait.

I ran ATI Tool for an hour and a half trying to find my max core speed. It ran fine on 295.36 for almost an hour then an error showed up. My temp was 60.5c which I think was the problem. Should I buy a different cooler since I want to OC my card once I get the new MB? Thanks guys.

I think I might have damaged my 9800 Pro. After trying to find the max core speed using ATI Tool I decided to play a game with the cards core on default (378) as well as the memory (337). So I fire up a 2 year old game NASCAR Racing 2003 Season start a race, I start noticing some artifacts, nothing major. I run alot of 3rd party tracks and addons so I thought maybe that was it. Then about 5-10 mins after playing the game locks up, screen goes black and the sound starts repeating. So I thought maybe it was my CPU, I have that OCed from 2.53 to 2.8ghz. I set that back to 2.53ghz and try the game again. Same result as above. The CPU and GPU temps were fine, CPU never got above 42c and GPU never got above 50c. Anyway, does this sound like a damaged card? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like it got too hot but once you restarted everything from stock and it still had artifacts and stoped working, sounds like it could be damamged. Did you raise the voltage above where it was before you OCed it again? Also the card might be worn out from running at your OC speeds for so long. Id recommend going over to the local computer store and see if they can figure out if you really damaged it and need it replaced or it got too hot. If it is damamged you might be outta luck on playing games.

As I stated before, changing the voltage does very little for o/cing vid cards, and it just increases the risk of damage. It shoulds like the card needs to be RMA'd to ATI.

i'm not sure what happend then. It must have just got too hot. The the OC wasn't extreem, it started at 400 and worked its way down. But none the less the card isn't working right.

That would be a very bad move imo.

You need to go PCI-e, I cant speak for ATI but Nvidia is only releasing PCI-e versions of the 7800GTX so far.

9800P isn't that great anymore, it's OKAY for now.

If you dont want to go PCI-e yet, hold your money.

Maybe we will see new AGP cards soon.
