Quick background:
Grandmother died in 1998, grandfather is still alive, but now in retirement home. Their house was placed in the hands of the family. The family decided to try and sell it in 1999. After 3 years and many price reductions someone may by the house. The house is in the middle of no where(~40 miles from anything) with very low income neighbors, the house shares a driveway with them. Their dead cars on the lawn, dogs barking, them screaming at eachother.

My wife and I, are 24 and 23. We have an enormous amount of debt(school loans, cc debt, car). We moved from NY to GA in 2001. We now pay rent, utilities, and other bills which add up to about ~$3000. My wife has a stable job, while I do not. I work as a temp at a major Wireless company and PT in the evenings at UPS. We may make little headway on opur debt a month.

the issue:
last night I was on the phone with my mom, who is in NY, and she said that they had a buyer for the house at a very cheap price, the price of a used car. The house is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath. Needs a little work, but its livable. She is distressed because the whole family grew up there. Anyway, I see it as an opportunity to payoff debt, although i really don't want to live there, but I am willing to if it means financial freedom in 2 years. What do you think?

EDIT: Closing on the house would be next Friday, could a seller pull out this late?

Sacrifice a little today (live in a cheap place, pay off debt) and gain a whole lot more later (don't worry so much about money problems and enjoy life).

That's what I gots to say about it.

As in gaining a home I don't own, yes.
debt reduction....yes.

gas costs go up, and so do car repair bills most likely, but not having $800 in rent a month and only paying the family rent of whatever I don't know what they would charge. maybe ~$300

I moved to a cheaper place and have really reduced my debt with the money I have saved. If you not going to take a big hit in terms of quality of life, for example what does your wife think about the move?, take it.

The wife would be ecstatic to move back, I don't want to at all, but I do want to get out of debt.

Quality of life of our surrounding would change dramatically, going from middle to upperclass suburbia, to low income, most likely gov't assisted neighbors living in the sticks. But as far as our quality of life I could only see it getting better, right now we live just beyond paycheck to paycheck finally. We can't afford to do much, we might see a movie once a week or dinner, not both. We share one car, so getting another one is a MUST

Upstate NY is really really cheap.

I'd go for it. My friend has a house up there and 80 acres he bought for 50k. If your close to Canada cant you commute there and work there?

Are you allowed to work in canada and live in the US? I dont see why not, but thats where the jobs would be.

Its just 35 miles Southeast of Syracuse, right in some Lake Effect Snow band whe it dips a little south of the lake

You could work in Canada and live in the US or vice versa easily if you qualify for a TN profession (temporary worker under nafta - check out ins.gov), but 2 hours is a long trek.

I would say that considering you're iffy on the idea yourself and can't really decide either way but that your wife would be "ecstatic" to move back, the choice seems easy, doesn't it?

Its easy for her, but I never wanted to continue to live there. A new twist is that I just found out that the closing on the house with potential buyer is next friday, can a seller pull out this late?
