I have a strange problem. About a month ago, I bought a P4 2.0a C1 chip from the FS/FT forum. I bought this off a VERY well respected and established member here. When I received the chip, I put it in my Asus P4B266-C (replacing my 1.6a) and could not get it to boot. It would post but would not boot into windows. I tried re-installing it several times but it was just a no-go. I contacted the seller, shipped it back and he tested it out. It worked fine for him so we agreed that he would send it back to me. I bought another motherboard, an Asus P4B533-E. This motherboard runs my 1.6a fine. I put the 2.0a in and guess what, same problem!!!!! I have tried upping the voltage, using jumpers to set the multiplier and FSB instead of going through the Bios, and still it will only post, not boot into windows. I feel certain that there is nothing wrong with the chip because it worked fine for the member I bought it from. The only thing I have thought of is that MAYBE the heatsink is not making good contact with the cpu. The only P4 heatsink I have is the retail Intel one that came with my 1.6a. I ordered a Vantec Aeroflow last night so I'm going to check that out.

Any other suggestions? Am I just missing something that is obvious or does this chip just not like me? I'm starting to get a complex!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
William

If I had to guess I would suspect your power supply, since the cpu has been testes twice and you 1.6a works then it's probably your psu that's holding you back.

did you try booting at 100fsb?

Budman, yes, I only tried booting at 100 FSB with the 2.0a chip. As far as the power goes, it runs everything else fine. My power supply is an Enhance 350W. I know its not the best but it should do! However, I am looking into getting an Antec 400W though because I'm about to buy a 9700Pro and I figure I'll need it with that!

Lizardman, I have my 1.6a running at 2133 right now, haven't tried any higher yet.

Thanks,
William

I had problem similar to this going from a 1.6a to a 2.0a c1(dell pull) chip on an Abit bd7. I had to clear the cmos.Everything worked good after that, but I pulled my hair for about an hour before i decided to try that.

CATASTROPHY---Thanks for the suggestion, just tried that and she is still a no-go!:|

Jgtdragon--I'll keep you in mind. Gonna wait till the new hs/f comes in from googlegear(should be here Tuesday) and give that a try. If that doesn't work, I may yell at you.:)

Anyone else got any suggestions? I'd be happy to hear them.
