My friends sister is selling her G3 Mac.. i checked out the system today and heres the specs...her brother (my friend) is looking to buy it and would like to run Final Cut Pro mainly on it. Heres a link of what the system looks like.

-G3 300
-64 PC100
- 6 gig hard drive
- ATI Video Card
- CDROM
- Firewire

She is asking 230 for everything with the monitor. He doesnt know much about computers but is very talented with video work. If i were bump up the ram (4 slots) and replace the HD, would he would be able to run Final Cut? Thanks guys

At least PC100 RAM is dirt cheap but that's a slow ass machine.

I guess it's a good start then he can plunk down $1,500 for a PowerPC G4.

Who the hell would buy a 300 MHz computer now-a-days??? I don't care if a Mac 300 is equivalent to a Pentium III 500 or 600, it's still ridiculous since you can get a brand new P4 or Athlon system for under $500 (with a monitor). Plus it's pretty shitty for this guy's sister to be ripping him off like that.

Did you bother to even glance at the system requirements I posted for Final Cut Pro?

I dont think its really his sister.. its more of her roomate i believe.. i dont know the details of where the computer came from basically... he has done some editing with his PC, but really likes using Final Cut and wanted to get this one as a second computer

Yep i did, according to what i have read, heres what they are requireing for specs.

System requirement
? Macintosh computer with an optical drive supporting CD-ROM format and minimum 300MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or G4 processor and built-in FireWire*
? Mac OS 9.2.2 or Mac OS X v10.1.1
? QuickTime (included)
? 256MB of RAM (384MB recommended for G4 real-time effects)
? 40MB of available disk space required for installation

Hmmm

That machine is roughly equivalent to a Pentium II - 300MHz.
While you may technically be able to run FCP you will be able to draw each frame onto some film by hand before it finishes compressing it.

Actually with 64MB of RAM you can go shopping for a new computer while waiting for the OS to boot.

If you don't believe me, you can read them yourself on Apple's website.

You don't get real time effects (cross-dissolves, etc.) in FCP 3 unless you have a G4/500 or faster processor

What about Final Cut Pro 3.0? Those specs were pulled from the 3.0 requirements...

STFU. look on ebay and you'd realize this is actually a decent deal...if you are in the market for it.

Thus why my first response was "$230? Now."

A Blue & White G3 still pulls a lot of money on the public auctions.

If he doesnt end up geting it, I will probaly just offer the person 200 for everything... i could always use another system :p.. or i could just take the semi cool looking mac case and put my rig in it :).. i love working on "projects" and this would be a rather interesting one because i know sh*t about macs
