We are about to have our first child and will be taking a lot of video footage. I want to build a decent PC to edit the video and burn it to DVD. I want to spend as little as possible. I already have a DVD burner and 18" LCD. I need recommendations on MB, CPU, HD, VID, and Memory.

If you are willing to spend about $120 more, I'd replace the Pentium 805 with a 940...

If you want to go single core cpu, I'd recommend going Athlon 64. DDR memory is a little more expensive right now, but a motherboard could be found significantly cheaper.

You could go even cheaper than that without a problem, single core 754 CPU and motherboard with integrated graphics, 1GB RAM and a HD would do the job, just a little bit slower.

A fellow memphian helping me out. Is the dual core Pentium better than the single core Athlon?

For video editing it may well, check out the comparisons at tomshardware.

http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.ht...delx=33&model1=258&chart=67&model2=203

The AMD single core i picked out there is a 3400 754 CPU, and the Intel is a 820 (bit faster than yours). In some applications the dual core will thrash the AMD single core, mostly things like media coding and video work. Since that's what you're planning on doing... ;)

Having said that if you're willing to wait 5 minutes for something to encode rather than 4 it's rather academic, no point in buying Deep Blue if you're not going to need it.

Yeah I was thinking of going with a single core Athlon. I also forgot about a case. What is a good black case and power supply?

$80 combo from Fry's/Outpost. Fry's/Outpost will often have the Seagate HDD (5 yr warranty) on sale for $50 to $80 AR (200 to 300GB). Buy the cheapest AGP card with DVI out if you plan to connect it to a good monitor. If you have a basic monitor without DVI, then go for the cheapest AGP card ($10 to $30 range). 2 x 512MB Corsair Value Select or Kingston Value RAM for about $80. The Sempron 3100 will overclock to 2.25GHz without any problem.

If you start out from scratch, then you may want to consider the ECS NF4 754/Sempron 3100 at Fry's/Outpost...also $80 this week. Note that the PCI-E video card will probably cost $50.

CompUSA currently has a sale on the Antec SLK2650 case with a very good 350 watts PSU. Deal is good till Sat. $30 AR. Order online and ask for in-store pickup at your local CompUSA.

Get something based on the RS482 chipset from ATI. I just built a mythtv box with one which I got for like $70 CDN. Throw in a S939 3000+, 1 GB ram, use the onboard graphics and sound, and get a nice big hard drive. You can put it in an mATX case and it'll sit nice and quiet.

For your video editing needs, no, unless you want to OC. The 805 has extremely high OC potential.

Maybe if you give us a budget, it would help a little. :D

I'd stay away from older hardware, i.e., skt 754 cpu/motherboard. Definitely go skt939 or socket T LGA775 for Intel.

Intel processor with OBV...not my cup of tea, especially with the $150 price tag. My overclocked Sempron is much faster and runs cooler. Why do you want to pay more for that Intel combo?

You wanted to spend as little as possible, but then you elected a combo that costs twice the $. Not logical!

That's a pretty good budget, so I would not recommend a combo at Fry's Outpost, they use rather cheapo motherboards.

SonataII + PSU $80
CPU + motherboard $150-$200
graphics card $40 (assuming not integrated)
RAM $80
Mouse+keyboard $50
HD $50-80
Optical drive $30
Monitor = rest. (Prices very rough guestimates)

If you're not doing anything really hardcore on the computer then you'll get far more pleasure from a nicer (and maybe larger) screen than you would from a faster CPU.

I've build many $700 rigs with WXP Home. If you do your own installation, then the cost will probably be around $500 to $550 for parts and the OS.

Key points here are you are getting a dual core cpu (cheapest AMD dual core is $295), an Intel 945P chipset (for performance and stability), full GB of ram, large hard drive with 16MB cache and a nice black case and psu. I just built a system with that case last night, very nice case, easy to work with. The door is a little flimsy, IMO, but should be fine.

You may also want to consider a Dell XPS 400, I think you could get the same quality stuff and save quite a few bucks. If interested, LMK via PM, I can tell you how to get them cheaper through Dell (I sell them for a living).

ECS with Matsushita FJ/FL and/or United Chemicon KZG/KZJ capacitors = CHEAP? Same NF3/NF4 as found in the BRAND NAME board. ECS is one of the top tier MB manufacturer. Brand name does not assure quality. Do your homework because there are good n bad board from any mfr.

Also INTC is losing market share to AMD because of PERFORMANCE and STABILITY? Check out the stock prices of INTC and AMD. Numbers don't lie!!!

I don't sell PC for a living. Good luck with your build.

My first video editing machine was a 1GHz AMD processor with 512 MB of memory that I bought about 6 years ago. It worked fine for firewire capture and basic editing - the only thing that was slow was the MPEG2 compression. I typically would have to leave it running overnight to compress a DVDs worth of video.

The point is, you don't need much horsepower for anything but the compression stage, so any modern machine should do fine. Dual core is a big plus, because you can render in the background while doing other things. If that is important to you, then go with the cheap Intel dual core setup. I personally prefer the Athlon X2's, but you would have to go cheap in just about every other area of your build to get an X2 and stay in budget, so the Intel is probably a better choice for your budget.

The big boys use two hard drives..
you read on one and write to the other..
less chance of dropping frames...

IS it better than Pinnacle? Also, my vid camera is a Canon Optura 60. It has USB and firewire. Is ther any advantage to using firewire over usb for the capture? I have tried the usb with windows movie maker and it seemed to work fine.
