Need advice on a car for the g/f

This woman that I am seeing has to get a car. She has a new commute to work and will be driving an hour each way now, instead of using mass transit. After all this snow she is thinking that AWD is the way to go and wants a used audi or subaru, like around 99-00 model. An SUV is not an option. She is a totally green, novice driver. Getting something reliable is very important and I guess she has to pay around $10k and its gotta be financed. So what should I encourage her to look at for a car ? I suggested to her a subaru legacy or forrester and saw a bunch of them on eBay but a lot had over 100k miles. Its gotta have an auto tranny and can't suggest an audi w/auto.

If she's a new driver I'd say a Subaru - not German so less on (possible) repairs.

Go subaru. Problem is if you go audi it'll be more like 20k plus for an 00 model and you'll also spend much more on repairs.

audis will run up over 15k and thats mid late 90s models.. the 00-01 are 17-22k...
