Got a bargain on a Phenom quad core 9750 at frys and a cheap Ecs AM2 board, was wondering If I could use this old ATX 12v P4 Tricod Power supply instead of having to buy a new one. It comes with an old 20 pin power connector but I bought a 20 To 24 adaptor so I can plug it into this newer 24 pin motherboard. My question is do you think this is a good Idea and a way to save some bucks or a disaster waiting to happen.?? Is it strong enough to handle a Pci express Card??

Here are the pictures of the power supply in question.

I appreciate any info thanks. If the majority say its a no go I will probably buy this one from New Egg cuz its a good price and good reviews.

What videocard are you using? only 18A of 12V isn't enough for most gaming worthy graphics cards.

I am inclined to say neither the PSU you already have, nor the PSU you have selected at newegg would be a good idea. I don't know anything about your current PSU, but it is an older design and the Core i7 will suck up a lot of power...12V power not to mention it depends on your graphics card. As for the one you selected on newegg, HEC doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation and $30 for what is supposed to be a 585W unit sounds rather suspect to me.

But, as already stated, we will need to know what other components you plan to run in order to give you the best advice.

Hoofan is right, neither the old PSU nor the one you picked would be a good idea for a PSU (HEC/compucase is not a reputable nor high quality PSU company)

Something like this silverstone should work well, and have plenty of power for a phenom build (assuming you're using a single video card)
