Need advice (oil, fire, smoke, etc)

Well, the boiler downstairs in the basement (I'm on the 1st fl) screwed up today (dunno the details, caught on fire or something), woke my family up due to massive amounts of smoke in the apartment, and after calling the FD and landlord, it turned out to be a boiler prob.

Anyway, they decide to try to fix it for tonight even though it'll be replaced tomorrow, so now (yes, 11 PM at night), they're still working on it. Lo and behold, they don't seem to be doing a good job, they keep turning it on to see if they've got it fixed and like clockwork smoke filled the apartment. Up go the windows again to clear the place out.

My family has been talking to them but they don't seem to be willing to want to stop until they fix it. It's pretty cold out tonight (30F), but I guess rather than have the entire building cold (3 floors), they don't mind making our apartment filled with this damn smoke.

My question is this - is oil smoke harmful, and does it stay in objects (clothes, etc) for a long time? The boiler is right about directly under my room (lucky me, huh?). Also, it doesn't seem to set off our smoke detectors (yes, we've tested them numerous times today, they work), so are the detectors faulty, or do they only pick up certain types of smoke?

if you are going to sleep there tonight, i suggest keep the window open, put a fan by the vent, move away from the vent and get a lot of blankets. smoke inhalation is not something you want to do if it can be avoided, and might not want to leave any really nice white stuff out, may have to wash it, and never know when your whites wont be white enough
