Ok here's the background..

Asus Rampage II Extreme with a D0 920 aboard, Xigmatek 3 heatpipe direct touch cooler w/ PWM fan w/ max of 2200rpm.

I'm showing 1.144v, 160 BCLKx21.0, 3.369

Voltage:

1.36 QPI/DRAM
1.81 CPU PLL
1.14 IOH
1.63 DRAM bus

HT is on.

Realtemp is showing an idle at the moment of about 52c on average. If I run prime95 64bit I get temps around 80 within 5 minutes. I'm pretty certain about my HS/Fan mounting. I have 2 D0 chips, but have only tried with this one.

I don't quite understand why I'm seeing about 52c on idle at 1.144v though.

Any suggestions on how to get higher without blowing the top off the CPU?

Is this with the side panel open or closed?
Can you see what happens when you pop the side panel on your computer?

Maybe u applied too much thermal paste? how did you apply it? what brand did you use?

i dont understand your temps too if your confident on your mounting... id say try another one and try to put more pressure on the cpu.

This is with the panel closed, Antec p182. I may pull the HS/fan and check the paste, it was the Ceramique stuff. Just really getting to the point of pulling my hair out with people showing realtemp and temps in the high 30's idle and 60's for load at 4.0/3.8 etc.

If I hit stop on the prime95, within seconds I'm down from around 80 to low 60's, and right now around 50 at idle while I type this. The upper 30's might as well be a million miles away.

first pop your side fan...
see if you have issues with ventilating.

The Tim Method i use is...

The i7 cpu is rectangular, so draw a line sideways along the long side directly in the middle.

You dont need to go all the way from end to end, you want to leave a little gap on the sides or your TIM will oooze out.

I'll try the side panel this morning and see. As far as the TIM, the HDT coolers need something a bit different, myleftnut references a link I followed to install actually.

thanks

Well I took the side off, put the board to all stock voltages, speeds etc. mid-upper 30's.

Put it to an indicated 3.5 (21x167) with 1.176 and running prime95 64-bit. Right now with the side off I'm seeing about 75c average after running p95 about 10 minutes.

The ram is set XMP 1.5v 8.8.8.24

I'm just trying to get to around 3.3/3.5 with some temps I can live with. I know when I put the side back on I'm going to get around 50 again idle and 90+ load, but I thought it was good ventilation.

I don't know.

You need to take some time and head over to my section.

And read this and start rebuilding.
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=1846069&enterthread=y

Your case must be a rats next for the side panel to have stabilized your temp.
This means ur not pulling cool air inside, and instead your recirculating the warm air inside your computer.

Read the link i posted, its a cable management guide. See if you can clean up your wiring inside.
