Hi all,

My new pup was in a tight kennel with another pup for about 2 months straight before we adopted and took it home. It was in one of those cages with newspaper lining beneath a horrible cross-wire floor. Anyhow, I knew she'd be a pain to housebreak. Any ATOTers with sound advice??

Thanks!!

have you researched crate training?

it worked for me. positive reinforcement+crate training.

Crate training works wonders. You'll need to decide if you'll housetrain or take the dog out to relieve itself and train accordingly. Just make sure you reward the puppy for doing its business in the correct area. For the first couple months we would watch the puppy and commend or correct "bad doggie" when it relieved itself.

Do it now, the crate will become his "Den" it will be a place for him to feel safe and secure, you will put him in there when you leave the house and take him outside when you come home, he will not foul his den.

Crate training is a must.

I had a Dalmation many years ago that I crate trained, one day for a joke I got inside his crate looking out at him and kind of growled a bit, he didnt like that at all, to us it is just a box, to them it is their private space.

When you take him out of the crate, go straight outside do not hesitate for one second. Make sure that you always put him in there when you leave the house. Also, make sure that the crate is not too big. Dont want him to be able to poop and pee and have plenty of room in the crate to get away from his mess

..you guys eventually take the dog out of the crate right? Like, I mean, you guys don't keep your grown dogs in crates when you leave, right?

Sure, crate training does not take long at all.

While I am at work, my dogs are sleeping on my bed. Not a bad deal for learning to pee out doors.

Note my avatar and nick. I am a bit of a dog expert. I have had 5 dogs, not to mention did a lot of rescuing, and boarding. One woman wanted to but her pure bred poodle down becasue she did not want to pay to board it while she was in Europe. My ex-GF worked at the vet, and she took the malnurished beast home. Nursed him back to health, and Set him up with a nice retired couple

why not? Most dogs sleep the day away when there is no one to play anyway... that was too much rhyming.

Eventually, once they are house broken, you can grow more and more lienient with them and eventually they won't need the crate anymore. Eventually they will learn to sit by the door you use to take them outside when they have to go. One of my dogs actually does a potty dance by the door, which is good because sometimes he just wants to go outside and sniff around... we can always tell when he has to actually go.

The crate is not a bad thing to them, it is their space, when you are gone and they are in their crate they feel secure, you have to try to imagine an empty house from a dogs perspective, way too much stimulation(visual/audible) and no controls(you saying "NO") also no human comfort, all this adds up to boredom, stress and anxiety which equals one wild puppy tearing ass all over the house pooping and peeing and destroying, these things also cause them stress and anxiety because they know they shouldnt do it, but there is nothing to stop them.

As they mature and become comfortable in their environment you simply put them in the crate when you leave but the door can be left open so they can come and go from the crate.

This is actually part one of the first steps of the training, when you are home the door to the crate is open and they are free to roam about and go back to the crate as they wish.

Part of the stigma of crate training I think is the word "Crate" which makes people think of a haphazzardly constructed box made of splintered boards with nails sticking out :D it is actually a "Pet Carrier" a somewhat large plastic container with a window in three of the sides and a door on the front.

Got her a crate today, and she's not afraid of it at all. Haven't closed the door on her yet, though. I'll let all of you know how it goes!

Yes, what everyone else says.

Do some reading and researching. Remember that a pup's bladder is small and a general rule of thumb is that they can "hold it" for 1 hr max for each month of their age during the day.

Also, never use the crate as punishment for when the puppy acts like a puppy and gets into mischief. It needs to be his "safe place".

Good luck!

when puppy wakes, up, put it outside. when puppy eats, put it outside. lots of postive feedback when it goes outside, negative when it goes inside, but only if it was recent, otherwise they can't remember doing it. and there's no need to get violent, some scolding is probably fine.when you leave, put it in the crate or locked in the kitchen or something, so it will feel safe. if you leave it outside, it will be scared. don't leave it for more than 4 hours or expect to find a little "present." it's just a matter of slowly teaching the pup what the den is. you start off easy with the crate. the puppy learns that one fast because it is small and only for them, and gross if they poop in it. then you add a room at a time with those puppy gates, and puppy will get used to it all. also, get some of that enzyme smell-go-away stuff, it helps make "soiled" spots less attractive for repeat visits.

of course, i'm no expert, but that's what we've been doing with our puppy. in general, it works. she tells us when she needs to go out, but every now and then she has an accident out of the blue. so obviously we're not the perfect trainers, but at least she's basically trained.

What if you are gone to work for 8-9 hours a day during the week as I assume most puppies can't hold it that long? Should you:

1. Allow the puppy access to one room and assume it will poop/pee in there while you are gone but train it to go outside when you are home, as it gets older and is able to hold it

2.Put the puppy in the crate the whole time and clean the crate when you get home if need be, teaching it to go outside when you are home/weekends.

3.Adopt an older dog who is already trained or who at least has the physical ability to hold it in the crate all day

4.Don't get a dog if you are gone that much

5.Other?

buy a book, i read a few from the library too. puppies for dummies ain't bad. u got one chance with a puppy... don't f*ck it up.. or u'll end up miserable and have a psycho dog u can't deal with.

puppies piss and sh*t way too much, its time consuming but u gotta do it. i didn't crate train, but regularly brought him outside to do the business.

also left out a liter box, which wasn't used sadly, and some of those puppy pads which did get some use. expect mistakes though. u gotta read a book....more info then anyones really gonna put in apost

Puppies are funny. Somehow I was always the one who spent the first week with our puppies when we first got em. Staying up til 3am trying to get em to go asleep - them running around, stopping in place, and peeing while staring you in the face. I was lmao and mad at the same time.
