I picked up the Panasonic RV31k last year for around $140.00 or so. I like it. It plays mp3 and vcd's. Lots of bang-for-the-buck.

Panasonic RV31k

You want to be sure that whatever you get can do mp3 and vcd just because most do now and it's a nice option to have. Unless you have a HDTV, then don't spend the extra $$$ on getting a "progressive scan" unit unless the price is just a bargan too good to pass up. You may also want to look at the Toshiba units. They have some good reviews. I was suprised to learn that Sony was having some trouble with quality based on user feed back from epinions.com -- check it out for youself and good luck!

A little more money but I really enjoy my JVC

I actually have the F85GD and not the F95GD as my other player (JVC 723GD) already does DVD Audio.

My old Panasonic A310 burned me on Panasonics so I went the JVC route.

Oh, and having several discs available is kinda nice (esp. for multi-disc sets). Plus I can leave a couple of MP3 CDs in there, too.

panny RP-91. ;) Oh, what's that you say, 150-200?

I second the Panny RV-31, my family has two, one for me, one for the family. Does the job quite well.

Check out the Panasonic DVD RP56. It's a progressive scan player that has gotten very good reviews, plus I have one and I am very impressed with the picture quality.

Here's one

You can find it for $230 or so.

Why no one mentioned Samsung? They make damn good DVD Players.
Mine Samsung DVD player has fast forward at 128x, optical out, and a nice feature called "screen fit" that it can change the Wide Screen format to regular (or whatever it's called)
