Need Advice: HP notebook giving "Grey" Screen

Has anyone seen this?

It will not post on an external monitor either.

after pushing power button, a solid grey screen pops up in 3-4 secs, then turns into this screen w/ black/shadowed dots all over.. the dots are random, diff each time I turn it off and on...

I pulled the hard drive and dvd burner, swapped out the RAM(it will beep at me with no ram), pulled battery. right now it should give me at least a "no boot media" error, but I get nothing but grey screen.

pulled it all apart and made sure cables are plugged in securely and not broken/cracked.

thanks for any input, finkle

My first thought would be problems with the video card... nothing else would display that grey screen. The fact that an external monitor plugged into the card still has this problem, and it seems to confirm the fact.

I have a buddy who had a similar problem, and it turns out that things were overheating in there. I'd start by making sure all your fans are clean and working.

thanks for the reply fellas,

It has the Intel x3100 video, so the bad Nvidia is not the problem. I was thinking video/integrated as well, but wouldn't it at least go through the process of booting?? with the welcome music? and then shutting off shouldn't be a 1-2 second thing?? unless with the video not working, it won't boot at all??

thanks again

the service tag says dv2915nr

product: hp pavilion dv2700

that video is like the "towel" trick for xbox 360... thanks though 🙂

this is a buddy's computer, but I'm sure Vista is all that's been on it...

A computer should boot without video just fine, but I wonder if video memory errors could cause some problems with the boot. Do you have a video card you could test in the machine? Using that "should" disable the integrated, then you'll know if you have a bad board or not.

And if you have a bad board, good luck finding a replacement. And if you find a replacement, good luck getting it tattooed...

The bios updates for the model indicate that the update F.2D date 9-2008 "Fixes an intermittent issue where the video controller does not respond."

again fellas, thanks for the responses...

I don't think I can do a bios flash, it will not even attempt to boot... Within 2-3 secs it is solid gray screen, with an external monitor attached, same thing w/ nothing showing up on external screen.

I'm not sure what you mean by another video card to put in it?? like an express slot or PCMCIA??

as far a finding the board, I hear ya... probably not going to happen...

A computer will NEVER boot without video. If a computer is booting and you aren't seeing anything, it either has video and you just cant see it, or its on but its not doing anything. Computers will never make it past POST without video installed, laptop or desktop. Period.

Have you opened it up or is it under warranty? I wonder if it is getting to hot, maybe the "Heat plate" if there is one isnt seated properly or something similar.

No warranty left... I haven't opened it up, but guess I will... It's no good like this... is it possible it would get to hot in a few seconds not to work?? or more likely already burned up??

I'll let ya know what happens..
