NEED ADVICE: how do I cool my CPU? (this is NOT as dumb as it sounds)

Ok well I just built my system, and my HSF works fine, but after playing Quake III Arena or Counter-Strike for an hour or so, my CPU temperature jumps from around 104 to like 111...........and this is TOO high for my Duron (I havent even OCed it past the 650 mark yet!!!!)

Is there any way to cool my CPU? I know you can use thermal grease, but I dont want to remove my HS yet; I'll do it when I get a better HS altogether, maybe an ALPHA.

Now my next question is this: will getting an intake fan do much to cool the CPU? or will it simply drop the system temperature? (I plan on getting one REAL soon anyway, but I was just wondering

plz some help.........

-THX

Sounds like you need to exhaust the hot air out of your case. Add some extra fans through blow holes or something of the sort to help cool the case and, thereby, cooling the CPU.

That isn't too high. I have myself an alpha and use the arctic silver grease and my idle temps are higher than that. Of course, I am getting 950 out of an 800 tbird with upped voltage (Only because win2000 is so damn picky) .. Mine runs around 49-56 degrees C (hotter than what you've got there) But I've got my thermal sensor touching the die. Not OCd I'm sitting around 40C with stock voltage. These processors run hot and I know their upper threshold is around 80C. NOTE: DONT RUN THAT HOT. I'm also talking about the tbird which runs hotter .. Of course - the cooler the better and the longer your processor will last (theoretically). I wouldn't worry about your current temps.. thats a fine number for a loaded cpu with a normal heatsink.

Yes if you have exhaust fans sucking/pushing the hot air out then cool air will find it's way in through joints/cracks in the case.

Also investing in a good HSF (GlobalWin or Alpha) and using Thermal Grease is the best way to change your CPU temp. ie: I went from a POS Asus HSF (no TG) to a GlobalWin FDP32 with Thermal Grease on my c366@550 and saved 14-16C on the CPU.

try a 120mm fan for intake and exhaust, that should definately lower the temp.

Case mods are fun!

aren't a lot of places to buy parts around here so i get what i can. at the moment i have a big 4" fan which i have to plug and unplug from the wall(pain in the rear, lol) blowing into my dell microtower(never again....) and it keeps my voodoo3 2000 relativly cool, more warm actually instead of the searing temperatures which it usually runs at. if you have no kind of active cooling for a voodoo 3 and touch any metal part of the board and you WILL burn. trust me 😉 anyways, like i was sayin, i got an 80mm fan which i am gonna place on my case after i cut the hole, and also when i find another, get another 80mm for exhaust. it helps greatly. i basically live by the more fans the better 🙂

Get motherboard monitor and run it with your case on.Then take the case off and run it.If the temp is near the same, its a non-issue.If not, then you need more active cooling(some more fans).
