Ok well I just built my system, and my HSF works fine, but after playing Quake III Arena or Counter-Strike for an hour or so, my CPU temperature jumps from around 104 to like 111...........and this is TOO high for my Duron (I havent even OCed it past the 650 mark yet!!!!)

Is there any way to cool my CPU? I know you can use thermal grease, but I dont want to remove my HS yet; I'll do it when I get a better HS altogether, maybe an ALPHA.

Now my next question is this: will getting an intake fan do much to cool the CPU? or will it simply drop the system temperature? (I plan on getting one REAL soon anyway, but I was just wondering :)

plz some help.........

-THX :)

of course thermal grease will help along with that alpha you are talking about, but make sure you get one that has a fan that will put out at least 32 cfm for optimal performance. Yes that intake fan will help out your CPU temp a little, but if you add an exhaust fan behind the CPU it will make even more of a difference.

If you really want to cool it you can get a peltier kit for about $30, but make sure you have an good power supply.

Good case ventilation is important, hard to do much cooling with hot air.

The Alphas are generally regarded as the best, I use one myself on a P3e, but models for AMD processors seem to be in short supply.

There are alternatives, like these

And probably some others, too.

Fan selection depends on how far you want to push it, and how much noise you can stand. The relationship between airflow, noise, and actual cooling is not linear. There is a point of diminished returns beyond which very little is gained in the way of cooling at a great expense in noise.

Run a search here and at the ArsTechnica forum to find out more about the taisol.

Disconnecting the 80mm intake fan on the front of my case raised the CPU temp by about 4C according to MotherboardMonitor.
