Ok, here goes.
My mom's computer a Compaq Presario found here
Crappy Comp
was running really crappy under Win98. Nothing major, just little things that would make her angry, like locking up, or not shutting down when she wanted it to.
(The only changes made to the computer at that point were 32mb more RAM and a NIC)
So I decided, what the hell, lets throw on Win2000 and see if that makes a difference (she wouldnt let me reformat her hard drive). So it installs fine, had a couple of problems, but I made my way around them. But it still runs slow as crap. I tell her, you probably don't have enough RAM, so I buy 128mb of pc100 RAM. Stick it in, and it gets better, but still having problems. Finally I convince her that we should reformat her hard drive and start over clean with Win2000. She agrees. I back up all of her important files and stuff and make a Win2000 boot disk.
So I now have a Win2000 boot disk, and I make sure in the BIOS that it boots from the floppy drive first. I put in the disk, and restart the computer. To my dismay, it won't boot and it says that there is an I/O error, and I have to restart from that screen. So I think to myself, what can I do? I reformat the floppy disks, and remake the boot disks. (Done on her computer with her floppy drive that works in Windows). I try again. Same I/O error. Frustrated, I try the disks down on my computer where they work fine. So I take my floppy drive from my computer and put it into hers and try again. Same I/O error. Perplexed, I call a friend and he tells me to give up with Win2000 and go with XP. What do you think? Its got 192 mb RAM in there now. If need be, I can swap out the 64 mb and throw in another 128mb stick from my computer. (I'm building all new, and I won't need this and it will still have 256mb left). So I wonder, should I try XP and hope it runs faster with less problems? Or if not, help me figure out what's going wrong now.
THANK YOU ALL
I feel a bit better now.
