Hey all,
I used this forum for my last computer build a few years ago and wanted to get some input moving forward with the next. My previous build highlights are below. I have pre-ordered a 1080 FTW edition from Amazon and am eagerly awaiting this. My gaming will be at 1440p as I have a ROG swift monitor that I am really enjoying right now. 4k may happen but probably not in the next 3-4 years and by then it may be a new build.

What I'm struggling with is the possibility of VR gaming. The new graphics card could handle it well but from what I have read the processor isn't strong enough for VR moving forward. I'm about 80% sure I'll get VR in the future but probably not for another few months while I save up for it.

I'm looking for advice regarding upgrading here. I know that the processor is a bit old and will likely be the new limiting factor on the 1080 build. However if someone has tried VR and has this processor and it still works then I could save the money on the build and get the VR gear earlier. Otherwise, I'll probably upgrade the computer soon in preparation for VR for the future. I'll be traveling to the city with my local Microcenter this weekend so I could pick things up as early as then. Just wanted to get some input from everyone first. Thanks in advance.

Hard Drives and Optical Drives - (OLD BUILD)

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Primarily gaming with potential VR gaming in the future.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$600-800 for remainder of build not counting VR device and pre-ordered graphics card.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
N/A

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
NVIDIA due to having a G-sync monitor and favor Intel for the most part.

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Case and power supply
ROG swift monitor
2 SSDs and a storage HDD
Pre-ordered eVGA 1080 FTW edition from Amazon
Hyper 212 EVO

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Tend to not overclock but not against the idea

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1440p

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
Possibly as early as this upcoming weekend if I make the trip to Microcenter.

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
No

The minimum requirements for VR are said to be an i5-4590 which is a 3.3GHz quad core released a year after your 3570k.

Meaning your 3570k should already be within ~5-10% of the minimum requirement. You should be able to OC your 3570k to 4.2GHz+ which would be more than enough to meet the minimum requirements. Now your CPU will still be your bottleneck, but it shouldn't stop you from playing VR games at least for the next year or two.

The 6700k is nice, but not strictly speaking necessary.
