Need advice for new stuff for 12 people company

Czar

Ok the thing is I got a job setting up a network and everything for a 12 people software company.

Need a server and workstations and printers, what would you recomend?

I´m going to talk to the manager on monday and then we will decide what to buy and stuff so I would like to get your input on this.

well since they are going to have broadband.. get a Netgear RT311 or somthing like that.
Get a Good fast switch maybe something like 16 users or so (linksys/dlink/3COM (pricey)/Netgear).
get them running 100BaseTX
Get a printer with a network card built in.

Personally I would go Netgear Network cards and Netgear or Dlink Switch. The router for the DSL/Cable.. make sure you research their needs on that.

Set them up with internal IP's 192.168.x.y and set their gateway to the router.

What will be the primary function of the workstations?

Does the company plan on expanding in the next year or two?

Pick reputable hardware companys with good tech support, as most users are not very computer savy.

For a company like that, see if you want to go Client/Server model or partial client/server with partial peer to peer.

What we have at work is a basically a peer to peer network - I didnt design it, however I am slowly moving important data to central servers that people can run apps off and save their data there. It allows me to then run backups a lot easier.

Compaq servers are good - however you dont need a high end one.
For clients workstations a Intel 810/815 chipset or AMD Duron chipset based computer - either gateway/dell/micron since you wont be able to come in all the time to fix stuff for them.

Go with all brand stuff from start if they have any plans to expand, trust me, you'll love that decision later.
Like TGG, Compaq makes very good servers(IMO by far the best).
For workstations, if money is a big subject(which it often is in such small companies), Id go either Dell or Compaq, around here, Compaq's are actually cheaper than Dell's, and so, a long time ago, the company I work for went Compaq, and its proven to be a very good investment.

Acording to the little chat I had with the manager the budget is something we dont have to worry about, just keep it reasonable.

There are 10mbit hubs there but everything else has to be bought.

The workstations will mostly be used programming in C I think and normal office stuff.

I was thinking going Dell because they have a good reputation and I´v had some experiance with Dell's and I like them.

I dont think the company will get bigger than 12 in the near future, but you never know.

Just one tip, get rid of them 10 mbit hubs and get 100 Mbit switches, just get some cheapo DLink ones if price is an issue, 10 Mbit sucks, and 10 Mbit hubs suck even more 🙂

Czar....if you want to I can quote you on some Gateway Systems incase you want to shop around. Just email me with the specs and i can run some quotes at work and email them to you.
