Need advice for new PC!

Hi all,

Am planning to buy a new PC with the following configuration:

CPU: AMD Phenom x4 - 955 BE
Mobo: Gigabyte AMD 785G MA785GM - US2H
Memory: DDR2 Corsair 2 x 2GB
HDD: Seagate 500GB
GPU: ATI HD 4890 1GB or 5830 1GB
PSU: Corsair VX 450w
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2233sw+

Used for: Gaming, Entertainment, Coding.
Country: India
Budget: Around 50000 INR (US $1100 )
AMD and ATI - fanboy
Overclocking: No intention
Crossfire: No intention at all
Resolution for Gaming: Full HD - 1920 * 1080
I plan to buy in about 20-25 days.

My worries:😕

  1. Memory: I am stuck between DDR2 & DDR3. Should I go with DDR2 or should i look ahead with DDR3? Is DDR2 good enough for a couple of years? If DDR3, then i should change the Mobo too. The one i have decided for DDR2 is a very popular one and nice one too, and its available here at a good deal for 4500 INR ($100). But, if u guys say DDR3 is the way, then please suggest me a good Mobo, enough for my config. Remember I am not gonna crossfire 2 GPUs (not even a dual PCIE 16x is required. A 16x+4x will do). So, a good board which supports DDR3 and has all features that are there in a 785G MA785GM - US2H, is enough for me. I am expecting the price to be under $130.
  2. GPU: This tough choice is almost settled, but still wanna get some tips. As said, I am gonna buy either a 4890 or a 5830. Now, 5830 is just now released, and i am gonna buy my pc in abt 20-25 days. I just dont know when 5830 is gonna hit the market! Any idea? I am going with the 4890. (Please save your energy guys! No need for another battle of the 4890 Vs 58xx!😀 The web is already flooded with these comparisons!😱) I have researched through all major tech review sites for 2 weeks now, got confused, flipped my brains out, even shred some hair i guess 😉. Now, am settled and contended with my choice!🙂
I have decided to go with 4890, as i want its performance. No, i don't like 5770, and 5850 is expensive for me! Ya, i knw Dx11 is already out there! But i don't care guys! Yes, 4890 will not be the monster in Dx11 games, as it is now! But, it will still be one of the good cards for the next 15 months right? It will still be able to play Dx11 games at a fair performance, I believe!

Now, this 5830 came and i saw its performs almost neck & neck with the 4890 (4890 leads marginally though). The price is speculated to be around $230. Here the 4890 is priced 11800 INR ($257). So, i thought, may be if the 5830 releases soon, and with a price close to 4890's ($20-$30 more), i can buy it. As said before, 5850 is pricey for me, a no-no! Its sold for 18000 INR ($390) here. Now, the problem:

  • The 4890 is fast becoming obsolete! XFX, Saphire, MSI, etc have stopped shipping almost a month ago, and not even a single can be found in entire India. Have some PowerColor cards left, and if i dont buy that in, say abt 10 days, am sure it will be gone too! (Retailers even advised me to buy the card before getting the whole PC). PowerColor too has some good feedbacks here! So not skeptical!
  • And i dunno when 5830 will hit the shops! Any idea guys? Can we expect to be in about 2 weeks? If it hits Indian Market, it will be priced atleast $280 here (am pretty sure on that). Also, there is this talk about Nvidia releasing its Fermi cards on March 26 which may force ATI to reduce its price on 58xx cards. So am just guessing/hoping the 5830 releases in about 2 weeks time and priced $20-30 more than 4890's here! Am i right? Just tell me, if i can wait for the 5830 to be released with an acceptable price, or if u think it will take more time for the 5830 to be in market, i will just go and grab the 4890, more than happily. As i said, i am contended with the 4890.
Help me out guys! Also, i think the Corsair VX 450w is good enuf to power my machine! Isn't it?

Buy DDR3, and yes you would need to change your motherboard.

If you dont want to buy a 5770, and a 5850 is too expensive, then dont get a 5830. Its a bad card for the price. Not enough of a performance difference between it and a 5770 to justify the price difference. So.... either get a 4890, or try to scrounge and get a 5850. I'd think its worth spending the extra money on a 5850 because it will last so much longer.

EDIT: Rumors arent good regarding nvidia's fermi, so I wouldnt expect them to be able to force ATI to reduce prices.

Okay, I will go with DDR3! Any suggestions for Mobos?

Also, i was thinking abt 5830 since its performance is very close to 4890, and i sort of hoped it would be priced around the same as 4890! So why not buy a card with Dx11 for a similar price, even though as i said, am not at all concerned about Dx11. But if its not priced very close to 4890 as you say, i will just dump it. Btw, any idea when 5830 will be in stores?

And 5850 - its $130 more than 4890 here! I am afraid i cant buy it, especially now that i gotta to switch to DDR3 and also a new Mobo! So some extra bucks will be spent there!

Guys, after some researching on net, i found the below 3 Motherboards which i believe is good enough for me (to support DDR3 with phenom II X4 955 BE),

  • Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
  • Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-US2H
  • Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H
Any word on performance, reliability, etc guys? Any advice wud be much appreciated!

I have built for clients several off that 785GMT-UD2H but those are for HTPCs/SFFs/LANparty gamers due to its mATX form factor - stunning high quality board but if u looking at ATX could be 770 chipset w/o IGP could be cheaper and serve just as well? Usual suspects

Asus M4A77TD Pro
MSI 770-G45
Gigabyte 770T-UD3P

Good standard build. So far there has been no system requirement on a game pointing out speed of ram. The type of ram isn't too important for games, even though DDR3 is faster. There is great upgrading potential on that motherboard.

Here's the thing. Upgrading is good, but no SLI/ Crossfire. Despite what people may say, those are not truly useful for anything except 3+ monitor setups and compensating for something.

I have the 4890, I am happy with it but the 5770 or 5850 would be what I go for these days (directX 11/ better energy efficiency). I've heard the 5830 has a poor price point.

DDR3 is good than DDR2.

DDR3 is the memory that is expected to replace the current DDR2 memory modules that we are using today. Continuing with the trend that DDR2 started where the system bus runs twice as fast as the memory clock, with DDR3, the system bus runs four times faster compared to the memory bus. This means that with the current memory technology, systems using DDR3 memory modules can achieve bus speeds that are twice as fast as systems using DDR2 memory modules. Comparing a DDR2 and a DDR3 that are running at the same memory clock speed, the DDR3 module can crank twice as much data.
