NEED ADVICE FOR MY BUILD

Hi,

I have a problem. I am building a computer using the MSI K8NGM2-FID, ATH 64 3000, 1 G ram, dialup modem. No other cards at this point.

My old computer is a P3, Asus board, and only 128 meg ram, running very stable on Win Millenium (thanks to Zone Alarm), and 2 HDs, one for backup.

I plan to upgrade to XP, and already own the upgrade version.

GOAL: I want to put the main harddrive from the old computer into the new computer.

The problem is: Do I upgrade to XP while the drive is in the old computer, and let XP adapt to the hardware there, and then put the drive with XP now on it into the new computer and let XP adapt to that hardware?

Or, do I first put the harddrive with Millenium into the new computer, hoping Millenium will adapt, and then upgrade to XP? I suppose this question kinda answers itself, because if Millenium works in the new computer, the XP upgrade should therefore be no problem. But I don't know if the MSI, and the Athlon 64, can deal with WinMe, or vice-versa.

Either method seems fraught with potential snags, not to mention building a new computer without this OS issue.

Much thanks to anyone with advice, and thanks for this excellent forum--which is why I bought this board.
