Asus P7 P55 D motherboard
Corsair XMS 3 DDR3-4GB

I am not interested in XFire/SLI and donot plan to do so in the future. Please advice on the card and the reason. why you chose the option.Maximum cost is 450$.

My suggestion: if he needs that computer before october sometime, get him the HD5870 or the GTX470 for nice performance.
The pros of HD5870 are less power and heat and also less noise and highest performance of the cards ive listed.

GTX470 is up there in the top, but all the pros are now negatives. Heat, noise and power used are above the HD5870, but its still not a bad card, especially at that price, it really depends on what kind of noise/heat etc you can "live" with.

HD5850 is hard to really recommend since AMD doesnt drop the price on it. It has been the best performance/price card since it got released but atm that title should be rightly given to the GTX460

GTX460, especially if you go for the 1gb versions with overclocks straight from the factories, like the Gigabyte one at 810mhz core (price is 254$, same as the HD5850) or the Gainward GLH at 800mhz core, is a very nice card and definetly the best price for performance card out there now.

If he can wait a few months (no official release date), AMD is rumored to release their next series of cards, which should drop both the current card prices and likely introduce higher performing parts.

I put a GTX 460 1GB in my new system and love it. Great performance, cool, quiet and all for the right price.

None of the other higher-end cards seemed like all that good a deal to me when I bought and they still don't, though the 470 is indeed moving to a very attractive price.

Of course, if you have $450 you want to spend, the 480 or 5870 are probably your best choices.

resolution?

this.

if he's gaming at 25x16 then gtx 460 is terrible advice. at that res only 5870 or gtx 480 makes sense, with the nod going to gtx 480 since it's under his $450 budget.

however, if he can wait 45 days or so for the gpu then the amd's 6 series is looking like it will be a significant improvement over current gen performance; ie, you should be able to get much more for $450 or less in a couple months.
