My employer is having me work out of town for the next 6 months and as part of the assignment will be buying me a new computer. It has to be purchased through Dell SB, though. After the assignment, the computer will be given to me for personal use. Budget is around $2000.

I'll be there M-F with nothing to do in the evenings, and home on the weekends. As I'm married and don't know anyone there, I'll probably spend a lot of time gaming on the machine.

So for recommendations just consider it a gaming rig.

Would it be best to go XPS or Precision? If I went with the precision, I was thinking of just going with their cheapest video card and then buying a nice card separately--does that sound like a good idea or are any of the workstation class cards good performers for the $?

Are the XPS machines overpriced? They seem a little high compared to non-XPS--what do I get for the extra $?

Any advice on how to best leverage this purchase to turn this into a good gaming rig?

Thanks,

Keoki

The video card choices for the precisions are not really good for gaming. I would price the PC at around $1700 and then see if your employer would use the rest of the money on a video card (x1950 pro or 7900GT).

The XPS are not bad performers and usually can be found for upto 20-30% off. It should not e a problem for any games that are up and coming. I would attempt to find one a coupone on ebates otherwise one of the members here I am sure has one.
