Need advice for a high end build

Hello

My brother had just told me that he wants me to build him a rig for both his personal use and his business use. His business designs car wraps, posters, etc... He will be doing a lot of 3D rendering and graphic art. He said his budget is very open and made it clear that he wants a high end machine that will allow him to do such tasks.

Its been about 2 years since i built a rig and my system was pretty much medium range for gaming. What i want to know is how much of a budget should we be looking at? I'm assuming core 2 duo for sure. How about video capabilities? power supply? OS (vista vs xp). ? motherboard? Sorry... I'm just not quite sure where to start looking for the kind of system he wants.

I appreciate the help. I will be heading off to class and will check the thread later in the day. Thanks!

Asus Striker Extreme mobo
E6600 CPU
4GB Corsair Dominator 8500C5D
eVGA 8800GTX
Seasonic M12 700W PSU
Lian Li PC7 Plus II Case

You need to ask him if the 3D software he uses makes better use of Quadro/FireGL cards, or GeForce/Radeon cards.

The only difference I remember between opengl pro cards and high end gaming cards were driver optimazations. Though things may have changed since I last checked. No need for a striker mobo, nor dominator ram (though 4GB is nice). I also think a 700W PSU is overkill. How demanding is the work he does on this system? What are his current workstation specs?

Alrighty. So i gave him a call and he said that he is mostly going to be using adobe suite CS2 stuff for a large portion of his work. He says he will be uploading "Poser" or "Shade" for his 3D rendering. His primary concerns are speed and efficiency.

In a nut shell, he wants his rendering to be fast and is willing to pay the price for his work. Thanks again!

aahh I didn't get to ask him what he is currently using, but when I talked to him he said that a lot of his work took forever. I'm assuming its probably a small set of RAM and maybe some dated hardware.

Should the new rig be somewhat like a gaming rig with minor differences here and there? Thanks!

Somewhat like a gaming rig, with the exception of video card. If no gaming is involved but with many 3d rendering FireGL/Quadro will be best suited.
