NEED ADVICE: does putting a filter on your fan hurt the airflow badly?

im thinking of gettin some filters for my fans (i live in a dusty place 🙂 and i want to know if it will greatly harm the airflow.
also, this may sound dum, but can they be cleaned (like with water) or are they one time only????
THX 🙂🙂🙂🙂

forgot one more thing 🙂
does it matter if i get aluminum mesh or foam????
does aluminum do any harm to the components?
thx 🙂

I can't speak from personal experience, but I remember reading about this subject a few months ago but can't remember where.

One person had claimed that aluminum filters they saw weren't fine enough for dust, so they used a double layer of pantyhose. That also made it very easy to clean.

You're gonna have to be creative to do this, but you need to have a larger surface area for the filter than the fan diameter. Got it?

For example, the inlet for the carb on your car is only about 10 square inches, but it has 100 square inches of filter surface.

Picture's worth a thousand words...

ok well this is what caught my eye:
fan filter (aluminum) from 2COOLTEK, but its only fan diameter
btw, do pantyhose work well????
also, would you recommend one since airflow is harmed greatly? (i only have 1 intake 🙁

i use that type of AL filter, and it's fine.

I also make my own out of window screening, which also works fine.

no filter is perfect, it's a balance of size and airflow restriction.

I have several intakes...

any of the filters will do...

i clean my filters with a vacuum cleaner.

as for fans, you can get the fans at 2cool or at electronics stores... i got my 120mm fans at jameco.com, there are others...

for a filter, build a frame out of popsicle sticks and but a DRYER SHEET inside, not the fomey ones. smells good too! or just tape the dryer sheet to the fan
it might be better to use used ones, cuz they are thinner.

OK heres the deal........ive decided to go with the aluminum ones......now 2 things:
1) can ya clean it with water w/o tearing it?
2) HOW BAD IS THE AIRFLOW AFTER INSTALLATION? (i have 1 sunnon 80mm intake)
also 1 exhaust, one cpu, one chipset, one v-card, and one PS

thanks, i said that, i find it cheap and it works. heh, i went to USPS and got the free packaging tape and got a dryer sheet and taped it to my fan works fine. Also, if u are intrested in making a duct system, order some boxes too for free from usps. damn gotta love the goverment for all them boxes and tape
