Need advice : Adding a second CPU to Dell PowerEdge 1400sc

I purchased a Dell PowerEdge 1400SC in a recent deal. I chose to get the 1.13 GHz Pentium III.

However, I did not purchase a second CPU because of the outrageous price Dell charges.

I'm looking into adding a second CPU to this bad boy, but I am unsure as to what to get. I found one here at this third party vendor for $180.

Is this the right CPU? And what else do I need? I've heard I need a VRM too?!?

Please advise. Thanks.

Not a bad machine. You're on the right track. But you almost made a fatal mistake. You need to match steppings.

I'm sure you know how to read a stepping. If not, Intel has a wonderful page on it that I can't find right now. -sigh- Anyways, you'll need to find the stepping of your existing processor, and ensure that the third party vendor ships you one of the SAME stepping. This being a much later board, looking to be 8xx-series chipset(?), you won't need a VRM. VRM's were phased out completely with the last of the 440LX's, as Intel went to better MOSFET technology and such. Other than that, that is the correct CPU and you're on the right track. Just make sure you match the steppings, and you'll be all set! 🙂
