So the story is that a friend of mine had a laptop that passed away due to too much caffeine, and we built a budget frankenstein desktop, by buing a zotac ZBOX id18 barebone and reusing the 2 SO-DIMMs from the dead laptop and its 2.5 hard disk drive.
These SO-DIMMs are seemingly identical and no-name (don't remember this brand, but I think it's not important at this point). They are 1.5 Volts, 2GB DDR1333 sticks. After installing them, the ZBOX uefi recognizes 3 GB total memory installed (2+1).
I tried all possible combinations of DIMMs and slots, and it's always the one DIMM that is problematic, always recognized as a 1GB DIMM, whereas the good DIMM is always recognized as a 2GB DIMM (I also did the permutations with single DIMM configuration).
So, now I'm running the Windows 8.1 memory diagnostics tool's extended memory test with both DIMMs installed.
The question is, should I trust this system if it passes the memory test? Do you have any past experience of long term use of half capacity DIMMs? Can this work fine?
