Long story short, I signed a 1-year contract with SBC Yahoo DSL in April 2002, and when April 2003 came around, I had it cancelled after I had fulfilled my contract. At this time, I also had signed up with Comcast for broadband, so for one month, I paid for both services, just to fullfill my contract with SBC.

Today, my dad came to me with a March 2004 phone bill that had a charge of $59.90 for DSL service. I thought it was a simple mistake, but after I called the DSL billing line, I found out that we had been billed for the past 10 months at $29.95 a month for SBC Internet Services. The manager I talked to on the phone said that their policy is a 30-day dispute window, and that by paying, I agreed to the amount of the bill. I don't see anywhere on the bill where this is indicated. Talked to him for about 20 minutes and he got tired of it and ended the phone call after the usual tag line "Thank you for calling SBC."

This amounts to $299.50 for 10 months. Any ideas on how to take this further?

EDIT/UPDATE: 4/20- Rep from SBC called earlier this morning witha couple of questions. He called back about 2 hours later and said that they checked the account and everything showed that we hadn't used the DSL line ever since our first cancellation notice. I asked him the cause of the problem, and he said when we had moved from our old location to our new house, the address change that was made by the CSR in a way that it had automatically signed us up for ANOTHER one-year contract. The guy that called said we will be credited a total of $329, but they are going to credit our SBC account, not cut a check. I really don't know which one of my actions caused them to take action. Here is what I did:

-Called the SBC DSL Billing Line
-Filed a report with the FCC
-E-mailed SBC several times
-Filed a report with RipOffReport.com

Which one do you guys think was the one that caused them the most concern? In all of the instances, I had made clear the fact taht I would've taken my case as far as it needed to be taken.

Thank god for 4/20...quite a coincidence, dontyathink? :D

Just finished filing a complaint online with them, form 475 I believe. I chose the "Cramming" option, where they add services to your account you did not authorize.

Make sure you have records of you cancelling the service. Then make copies and send it to the customer service department to get it resolved. It's clearly SBC's fault for continuing to charge you for service when you cancelled.

Or, call up your local news station and speak to their consumer action department. A company like SBC hates bad rep on the television.

I had to cancel via a phone call. They never sent a cancellation letter or anything, but I had called again after about a week to confirm that it was going to be cancelled. The manager I talked to today says that their records indicate that it WAS cancelled, but the line was reactivated shortly after the cancellation, unknown to us.

Email the customer service folks through the sbc.com web site. Give them your account number and phone number ... someone should call you back to discuss the issue.

You should also be able to escalate to each successive management layer on the phone.

Have all of your records available, and don't give up.

If you hit a brick wall, there is usually a Consumer Affairs Division of your state's Attorney General's office. Give them a call or write 'em a letter (including your documentation).

Good Luck

Why have you been paying a bill for the last 10 months on a service you didn't want?

So basically what you're saying is you simply wrote a check each month without even GLANCING at your phone bill? Honestly, people, if you go to the trouble of cancelling, don't continue to give them the money!

My dad was the one handling the phone bill, and he got used to seeing the charge on their every month after we originally signed up. When we cancelled, I told him about it, but he must've forgotten and continued to pay for it till now.
