I have 2 computers, both with Win98. One network card is attached to the DSL modem. The modem is not shared. The other NIC enables the network between the two computers.
My network knowledge is extremely limited but I had everything going reasonably well until a reformat a couple weeks ago. Before the reformat, there had been one or two occasions when I could not share a particular file due to this error message: "The specified network resource or device is no longer available," but it was so rare that I ignored it.
After the reformat and reinstallation of everything, the network worked well for about two weeks, then suddenly that same error message appears, but much more frequently. When the problem strikes, no one can access the affected files via ftp, and I cannot copy them to other folders or the other computer on the network. It's not that my data is so critical but I share what I have and it is heartbreaking to acquire it, then offer it only to have someone discover that because certain files won't transfer the whole effort was a waste of time.
I've tried installing a new NIC, moving the cards to different slots, adding Netbeui, changing ports on the hub and and experimented with a variety of settings suggested at various places on the web and in newsgroups.
The computers can ping each other, nothing in diagnostics seems peculiar, and there are no obvious conflicts.
Can anyone suggest something else? I've been researching all over the web and in usenet. This seems to be a frequent problem but with few suggested remedies as most of the postings have only one thread, which is the description of the problem.
Thanks.
