need a webcam...any suggestions?

I'm looking into buying a webcam for the first time, and I've never needed one so I've never looked into them. I don't really want to spend a huge amount on a simple little camera, but I do want to get some decent options. I know logitech is a good company. Any suggestions on models or links?

Let me know

Also, my usb ports are filling up fast...do they make firewire webcams?

If you already have a DV Camera with Firewall just use that and some software as the picture will out class any webcam on the market...

well, i don't have any DV devices...to expensive and they're outdated too fast...i just have firewire ports on my mobo, vid card, and sound card that aren't being used. just curious if they made firewire webcams.

Any additional webcam model suggestions?

The Logitech 4000 is good enough for your needs. It uses CCD instead of the usual CMOS sensors in cheaper webcams. CCD sensors in webcams have better low light performance and overall better picture quality. I have an ADS Pyro Firewire webcam (now discontinued) that uses a Sony CCD sensor. It blows any consumer webcam out of the water. When other webcams start to look really grainy and yucky under low light, this thing still looks smooth and clear. I also had an iBOT Firewire webcam, that uses a CCD sensor. Although the video is smooth, the color and graininess is ot up to the level of my ADS cam.

Another feature to look for is the type of connection it uses. USB 2.0 high speed or Firewire means it can stream video at faster frames/sec, which equates to smooth picture quality (less lag, less jerkiness). Of course in actual use, you can still get jerky video depending on your internet connections speeds.

I use the Logitech QuickCam 3000. The sound quality from the microphone is excellent...thats pretty much all I use it for now lol. Webcam quality's fine...there's really no one as good as Logitech for webcams 🙂

yeah...unfortunately all logitech webcams appear to be usb. i logged onto their online store last night and noticed their new quickcam fusion....it's the same price as the 4000 pro on their site, so which is better? Of course, when you shop through regular retailers the 4000 is about 20 dollars cheaper, but it still makes me wonder which one i should be looking for.

Still very much interested in a firewire option, though

Im getting a webcam too. Did a bit of looking around, and decided on the "Logitech QuickCam Messenger" (Im actually getting the buddy pack, and splitting it with a mate). I half chose it because it comes in silver/black, which matches my monitor, and they're only $30ea. 640x480 pixel CMOS sensor.

i have had a few webcam before, and i learned that resolution, usb1/2, cost don't really matter. I had a $20 intel one, and the quality was great. but too bad they don't make it anymore. I tried dlink and logitech, but they are not too impressive. Just make sure you buy from someplace where u can return easily. I am using one called "hawk", which i got from my trip to taiwan. In taiwan, they literally plugged in 15 different webcams on one computer and you can see clearly that more expensive ones like creative or logitech aren't better.

this is the one i bought (around $20)

i would suggest

they dont have the one bought, but this one

was my 2nd choice when i was in taiwan.

depend on what you want it for I have this one Logitech QuickCam Messenger with mic ok not that great though, cheap with a mic, if you want an USB one get a USB 2.0 or just a plain USB hub they are cheap I need one myself.

The Logitech Clicksmart 510 seems like a good deal on ebay, though it's 2 years old AFAIK. It advertises a 30fps webcam framerate at 640x480 with a CCD sensor, though it only uses USB1.1 for both audio/video. Is not having USB2.0 a biggie?

Also, how do the lower end Clicksmart 420 and Clicksmart 310 compare?

Buy my Sony TRV-340 DV cam. 😛

Search ebay for Ibot, they have firewire solutions. Might try to find the ADS as suggested above, basically any webcam with a CCD image sensor and Firewire is going to make a USB1 CMOS cam look silly.

Have any of you here,
seen the Logitech quickcam Zoom ?

I have a pro 4000 which is pretty damn good and I need a second one for my parents house, is the Quickcam Zoom any good ?

( purchasing a 4000 for my parents is too expensive, the price of the zoom is right, that's why I'm asking )

I own Logitech 510 and my gf own Logitech Pro 4000 and the Logitech 510 definitely has much better video quality. And webcam is the bomb when we don't have time to get together for real sex.

paldo how's the speed on the 510 compared to the 4000? The 510 only supports USB1.1 but the 4000 supports USB2.0. I'm not sure if it's actually using all that bandwich though since it just states "USB2.0 compatible"

You have to make sure it is USB 2.0 "High-Speed". If it says USB 2.0 "Full-Speed", it basically means its running at USB 1.1 speeds.

Shouldn't USB1.1 be enough even for regular broadband though? 12Mbps is way faster than most broadband bandwidths isn't it?

USB 1.1 SHOULD be enough for casual webcam activities such as Messenger or Yahoo. But if you want smooth video grabs off your webcam at 30fps or so, USB 1.1 starts to struggle. Even Yahoo or Messenger webcam sessions look better when the source of the video is better.

Anyway, I've been looking around for a webcam for my sister, came across this webcam.
It looks interesting because it has a Sony CCD sensor. $99 is kinda steep but maybe its worth it. Anybody wants to be the guinea pig?
