I beat it with a branch. :( Did it long and hard enough to make sure it killed him. The Sheriff told me I could shoot him after calling, but I don't want to scare the sh1t out of my neighbors.

Step on its head, shovel to the head, hatchet through the heart/lungs, there are any number of quick, humane ways to dispatch an injured animal that weighs two lbs.

Shooting is SERIOUS overkill unless you're using a .22 or smaller.

You have a dying squirrel and your posting ATOT for help on how to kill him?
I bet he is giving you the little squirrel middle finger right now.

How about some simple common sense? When you are 100x the size of the animal killing it humanely should NOT require a post on the internet.

Sometimes in life you just gotta wing it. I think some people ask for help with some pretty odd things on here. Especially when time is of the essence.

Viper - Exactly my problem. I really don't think a 9mm or .40 was going to be good for the little guy. My mistake. I'll be buying a cheap 22 that takes short and LR for precisely this type of situation.

To everyone else - I'm no pussy, I just feel a lot more empathy for an animal or a child than an adult human. Humans tend to cause their own problems. I'm sorry that I care that it was suffering. Trust me, if it had been just been dead already I'd have buried it or disposed of it and it wouldn't have bothered me. To hear it making blood curdling noises and roll around in agony is not a fun sight.

Take the stick out of your ass and think. Obviously there were a hundred ways I *thought* of. I was looking for something possibly more humane. I was either going to shoot it, drown it, or beat it. But you never know who posts here and what kind of suggestion they might have. So fvck off, Greg and quit being a douche. Common sense doesn't preclude me from looking for something *better* than what I thought of.

I remember when my sister was quite young (like 8 years old) and accidently stood on the head of one of her guinae pigs. It was whimpering and clear fluid was leaking out of its ears. Dad and Mom weren't there, so she got a spade and smashed it on the head to put it out of its misery (even tho she was crying her eyes out). In hindsight it was brave of her to do that, I spose, not sure if I would have done that at that age.

I don't blame the OP. I wouldn't have wanted to step on the bird head either. I mean, I'm no PETA member, but I think I'd have a hard time killing an animal in such a manner. Sorry you had to do it. :(
