I looked at the ones using DVD's as the recording medium, but if you record at highest quality you seem to get very little recording time out of them.

The HD ones and ones that use media cards tend to be a bit above the pricing range I am looking at, as I will probably not get a lot of use out of the thing after taking the trip I am going on.

Is Digital 8mm (I think that is the format) still around? I am pretty much completely out of the loop on when it comes to modern camcorders.

Steve,

I do videography for a sideline. What exactly is your price range and what do you want to use the camera for? Is this really only for a trip? If that is the case, rent one.

A few hundred dollars at most. I am not saying I will not have other uses for it, but the primary use will be for my travels, and after the trip I am taking it will probably be a while before I take another. :p I am not sure there is any place around here to rent one.

Going to get some sight-seeing in, but I will also be visiting various far-flung relatives that I want to record so I can share the tapes with other family members.

For a few hundred dollars I would take a look at the following:

Canon DC-40

Review:

It has nearly a 1/3 imager which should help in lower light. That is where most of today's camcorders fall apart. It is standard definition, but a good value for the money. It is a DVD camcorder.

For a little more take a look at the JVC GZ-MG555

It is a HDD camcorder.
