Need a very thin computer to wall-mount

trend

Senior member
I need to build/buy a computer that is small enough to mount on a wall. I have been thinknig about a shuttle.. but would prefer something even thinner.. Sort of like the mac mini at the largest.

Any ideas?

thanks

How powerful a system are you looking for?

Plenty of mini-ITX systems would meet your size requirement, but they aren't processing giants. And aren't uber-cheap.

It's not going to happen, a $600 Mac Mini is the cheapest ultra-small laptop-parts SFF you'll find. Above that at $700 is the new Shuttle X100.

I am thinking fast enough to do video w/DRM.

Maybe 1gighrtz + with 256mb of ram

Price is important however

What about using an older laptop? Someone on the FS forums had the mobo from a laptop stuck between 2 pieces of plexiglass and that was pretty thin. You could buy an older PIII laptop without the screen and mod it.

i have been toying with the laptop base idea - search for laptops with broken screens and you can actually get alot for $200-300 - older low end centrinos and P4-M based ones.

Yes! that is about the size/price I was thinking about.

I have been checking out mini-itx.com for cases however.. and can't find one exacully like I need it.. I need to be able to have a laptop hd or norm hd.. But don't need optical.. Need it to be no more than 3inches thick and would like it to be 7x7 MAX

Any other places to check out for cases? (Oh yeah, laptop idea prob wouldn't go over well.. but if it was for me, I would of done the laptop idea.. just isn't)

thanks!

Laptop base sounds like a pretty good bet to me.

You may also consider an ASUS Pundit P2-AE2 barebone. They're reasonably priced, support Socket 754 processors, and are about the same size as a larger mini-ITX case.
