Can anyone recommend a very quiet internal IDE hard drive? Its for an older computer I am using as a server at my house. Don't really need much size, and can even be used. I am looking for something cheap. Right now I have an old 10GB hard drive in there and its not the quietest.

Whats my best bet for quiet vs. cost? I don't even need 100GB, but I know the size isn't really gonna matter.

Problem is that there where no IDe drives made to be extreamly quite. Also you will likly wind up with an old drive. Not one that has been used just one thats been sitting on some shelf for the past several years.

Try a search of old reviews and see if there is an old IDE that was recomended for how quiet it is.

BTW. Why does it need to be quiet for a server? Servers are generally noisy systems. If this were for an HTPC then thats a differnt story.

If your machine is really old, you might run in capacity limitations either 32GB or 137GB so that's one thing to keep in mind. It's getting a lot harder to actually find non-SATA drives, so your best bet for quiet and IDE might be to use a notebook Parallel ATA drive and a 2.5" to 3.5" converter.

Or find yourself a vintage 2001-2002 Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV.

Those are probably the best choices right now. Those crazy quiet dudes at Silent PC Review really loved the Barracuda IV and it was probably their top ranked (as in quiet) 3.5" HDD until fairly recently. It's no speed demon though.

Whatever HDD you end up with, the best thing to do to make them quiet is to suspend them instead of hard mounting them to the case.

My Hitachi HDTs are darn quiet and considering I paid like 60 for them I'm happy.
