Need a version of Linux which will work with an old computer; MP3 Playback

I've read all about these fabulous versions of linux for servers etc., but they don't work with the old hardware I have. There must be versions out there that support MP3 and file 'serving' without needing 64-bit support etc. etc....
Thanks!

I use an old PII-400 for playing MP3's. It has 256mb ram and I use Win XP and I-tunes. It's a headless system that Use use RDC to login and control I-Tunes. Your celeron would prob be fine with Windows if you add a little ram. Even the linux distros are going to need more than 64MB if you want to run GUI.

Every distro can have mp3 playback support, but there are a few distros that provide it 'out of the box'. I belive Suse 10.0 eval, Mepis, and Mandriva do this. But of course, every other distro has the capability to have mp3 playback support, it just requires more steps.

For that kind of computer, I would recommend a light distro, perhaps Ubuntu.

I like using mpd (music player daemon) to play music as a 'music jutebox' sort of way.

It's just a server proccess that plays music. You control it through a veriaty of seperate front ends, a couple different front ends are even web-based so you can control your player through a browser.

Otherwise there are lots off different stuff people play around with...

Overclock that celery, I just had one given to me, its a 300 mhz its running stable for me at 450mhz and running pclinux os

multiplier [8 ] x 66mhz fsb =528 mhz plus or minus
8 x 100mhz fsb = 800 mhz speed

only problem you might have to buy a better cooler...not that expensive though

Seems rather unnecessary if he just wants to run an mp3 serving box, you could do that from an old P-MMX.

But why not run it faster? Its not like its difficult?

Because he wants it to last awhile?

I wouldn't worry about that, but even if it only takes 5 minutes and requires no extra cooling, etc, what for?
What's it gonna do faster?

It's a prebuilt computer by Emachines anyway, so I can't overclock. Thanks for the suggestions, I just need a few hours to sit down and do it...

I installed Ubuntu on my PII eMachine and its a 467 Mhz w/ 256 RAM. With Automatrix, I had no problem getting all the programs I needed. My mp3 music and audiobooks are great on this little system. You shouldn't have any problems either. Enjoy.

I suggest you up your ram to at least 128MB or better 256MB.

ok I'll drop it but emachine or not if its a slot 1 66 mhz fsb it can be OC'ed...but to each his own🙂
I know I sure noticed better response time.
