If you can get them down a grand. Then yes...

Where do you live by the way?

nope... i saw one in my area that was a 1998 with 120k miles for $3500 (but it was manual transmission, auto is probably gonna cost more).

maybe an offer for ~3800 should do for an auto right?

I have a 1996 Honda Accord w/ 109k miles on it, great car, handles like a dream and doesn't look like it is out of style. Great gas mileage as well (it cost me $4800)

Daewoo is no longer in business and they are as reliable as a car board box.

If you only care about automatic and reliable transport, for $4500-5000 I recommend a semi new american car (don't laugh). Most japanese used cars are overpriced and I would pay $5000 for a 140k miles civic or corolla. Buy something that is reliable, not famous, boring and you are all set.

Here are some recommendation:

1) Malibu or Chevy "classic", their resale is bad and too many in fleet sales, a retired rental car with 30-50k shouldn't cost too much if you look in the right place.

2) 03+ Focus, they also suffer the "fleet" problem and have no resale value what so ever. plus it handles better than a stock corolla and non-modified civic.

3) Pontiac Vibe (well, if you can get it for that price) or Geo/Chevy Prizm. They are basically Matrix/Corolla and you know what that means: reliability for cheap.

4) Ford Escort: while I don't know if you can find good conditioned cars from 1-3 for $4000, I am sure you can find an escort for that price. They are fairly reliable and good fuel efficiency, maybe you can get a low mileage one for $2500-3000 and save the rest in case of emergency.

Normally, if you are buying new, I recommend Toyota or Honda, but since they don't drop in resale so much, you really shouldn't be looking at them. If you are buying a much older car just because they are Toyota or Honda, you are already betting it will last x years more or N miles longer. Cars are still cars, they do wear out even for the reliable ones. I just replaced the head gasket on my supposedly indestructable, stock, Integra at 200k miles. My dad's 01 Taurus is running better than my mother in law's 97 Camry despite the camry was purchased with more miles for the same price.

how many more miles? a camry with 180k is obviously going to have more issues than a taurus with 40k.

Sounds like a decent deal.

Make sure the timing belt was serviced at 100k

Yeah don't chance that...a co-worker was going to trade his PT Cruiser in on a Saturday...just passed 100k. That Wednesday the belt broke. Cost him $2300 as valves and a piston was damaged.

Toyota Celica '94-'99, probably '96 or below. I love the look of those cars, or Acura Integra.

Edit- I'm in SD as well.

Camry: 140k
Taurus: 60k

around the same resale value.
