Need a UPS battery backup.

I have a 550VA Belkin UPS that like to eat its batteries every 2 yrs. At $60 a pop, I figure its time to retire and and get a new one. Any recommendations? I am not looking for somthing to run a long time, just something that can tell windows to hibernate.

APC and Tripplite both make good UPS. Battery life cycle varies with use. The more it is used the faster they will degrade. 2 years is a bit short, most go about 3-4 years without problems.

I just replaced an APC 500VA battery which lasted over 5 years. Portable Power has fairly good prices on replacement batteries . My APC 500VA batttery with shipping was around $24 for a Enersys NP7-12T . They have a storefront on Amazon as well.

They have a best seller battery list on the right pane:

Edit: I believe the newer APC 550VA units use the same battery I listed above if your looking for a unit that uses less expensive batteries.

The batteries should be lasting 3-5 years. It depends on the abuse they take but if you buy high quality batteries they're designed to last about 3-5. Some of the cheaper batteries on the market are actually 1 year life span batteries.

If you're looking to replace the unit, I would recommend you go with a Smart-UPS 700 at the least. It's a line interactive unit, offers avr boost/drop, surge protection, power filtering and sine wave output. The 700 is small data center unit.

I have two of the Smart-UPS 700 units, one for my gaming PC and one for my HTPC. Work was going to throw them out, so I snagged them and replaced the batteries with these over two years ago. They're still going strong. The price has gone up quite a bit though. I paid $100 shipped for two of them, and the same would cost $123 now.
