Need a tv recommendation

Ok heres the deal. I'm looking for a new tv to buy but with all the new tv standards which I don't know much about, I'm looking for some recommendations. I don't want to spend more than $1500. Currently i'm using regular cable but with all the talk about digital cable possibly becoming a new standard, do I need a DTV or do I get a receiver to change the signal to analog? Is it necessary to get a tv thats hdtv ready? I'm looking to make an investment that will last several years.
