HLP is the newer one (of that same price range). they have a new line as well that has the HD2+ chip (better than the HD3 chip). the HLN has (i believe) the HD2 chip, the HLP has the HD3 chip, and the other one (that runs about $700 - $800 more for the same size as the HD3 chip) is the HD2+ chip.
you could get the HLP46 series for about $2400 now. i have the HLP50 and that thing is amazing, i strongly recomment it.
EDIT: and IMO, when i was doing research of about a month, i personally think the picture quality goes in the following order:
DLP > LCD > Plasma
again, its my opinion, but all around the pic s on the DLP were the best by a good amount. maybe its just the samsung is so amazing.
thanks for the info --
I really wish i could find a place that a few of these tv's on display to compare them side by side.
do you think the HD3 is noticeably better than the HD2 chip?

well i personally can't tell you. i know the actual TV physically looks identical except for one part on the HLN that is silver on the HLP, or vice versa. there are many features of my TV and specs that i honestly can tell you I have no idea what they mean
you should jsut check out samsung website and see the differences aside from the chip in the TV. also go to the avsforums because those guys really know their stuff.
ALSO ... a big question ... are you going to be playing PS2 on your TV?

rallispec: bestbuy has a lot of these tvs on display. from the research i did before i bought my tv (HLP5063W), HD2 << HD 3 < HD2+
but the HD2+ models are about 600 - 1000 more, so i settled for the 5063W and the HD3 chip. i've had it for about 2 months now, and haven't had any problems with it. i have it facing my patio doors. i leave the blinds open most of the day and the room is lit by the patio doors. i can still watch this tv without any problems at all.

Samsung 46" DLP? HDTV Monitor (HL-P4663W)
$1999 at circuit city, available at the store right now - seems like a decent deal.
also - is the Cityadvantage Protection Plan worth it ($299)
yay or nay?!

that's an excellent choice (of course, i'm biased cause i own the big brother of hte tv =P).
and the protection plan is most definitely worth it. at the very least, you can get the bulb changed before the plan runs out - and the bulb costs $300. this will also take care of any other problem you have.
edit: if possible, pricematch it so that you can get it lower =P
