Ok, but why go AGP and S754 route? I'm thinking future proofing as much as possible. AMD has made it clear that S754 will be used for Sempron chips in the future, and there's talk that the Duel Core A64's will be S939.

There's also talk that mainstream dual core might not hit until a Socket M2 releases later on, though I'd imagine 939 is still better (high-end dual core should still reach this socket, and this could make for a good cheap future upgrade). If it's PCIe that's another concern, NF4 boards should make it to S754, though (the chipset is compatible, and there is one such board out now--though it is an ECS).

My first system I quoted was 939. 754 is just as fast in most benchmarks, so I don't buy the performance gains issue. 754 is faster in a few and slower in others.

I'm just trying to squeeze the most into the system for the price. Going with an AGP board saves $20. If you're going to do AGP, it would be kind of strange to do AGP 939 because if you're going to use the upgrade excuse, you'd want a 939 motherboard with pci-e in the future (well, maybe... who knows what dual core is going to need in the future?).

Yeah, 754 is a dead end, but I'm thinking there are a ton of changes coming up fairly soon and in a couple years from now when the system could be upgraded, who knows what the technology is going to be. Will a 939 motherboard be a relic? I don't know.

Good article in CPU Magazine either this month or last month, there's a very good chance S939 will be it for the Duel Core and that's what AMD is going to be sticking with for awhile.

I agree, performance differences between S939/S754 and actually AGP to PCI-E right now is marginal at best. But for $1300 you can build a system that you won't need to change 3-4 components when the new breed of CPU's or Video Cards come along.

Wow..thanks guys - so many replies in under a couple of hours ! thats a ton of information...good lead for me..thanks once again...

Edit:

- I have a CRT monitor lying around so i guess i will be using that for now
- I also have a copy of Win XP Pro
- and yeah I also have a keyboard and a mouse

so i dont think i will be needing those but i do need a DVD burner.

I totally agree. The AMD 64 processor thumps the Intel processor in darn near every gaming benchmark I have seen.
