so I'm going to buy a surge protector to protect my TV. are there certain specifications that I shoul look for when buying one??

they vary in price so greatly that I don't know which one to get.

Depending on your setup I would invest in a backup ups. I have one connected to my home theater just in case the power does go out for a minute or a low power situation happens Im ok.

For me that would be overkill. I have a ups on my PC & Tivo, and I think they have kicked in once in the last 7 years. All you need is something like this.
It has up to $100,000 connected equipment protection, which is also overkill, but will cover the tv and anything else you have plugged into it. That's all you need.

Do you have unstable power with power spikes that have caused equipment failures?

well, my area had a storm that recently killed one of my smaller TV's, and my cable modem. thats why I was considering it.
