torn between Nforce2/AMD and Intel/?, which one I am looking for something that has onboard lan audio and video and 1394 and USB 2.0. I was thinking Nforce but I have have not been keeping up with the newest components and changes since the DVD forum has been stealing all my time, please help I am looking for something for photo and mild video transcoding/encoding, I was also wanting to hit speeds of atleast Barton 2500+ or P4 2.53+ I will be running Windows XP.

Get a 2400+ (or Barton 2500+) and OC it with nforce2, you won't regret it.

I'd go with intel and depending how much you wanna spend..
gigabyte sinxp - $170 - Serial ata, onboard lan, 1394, RAID, lots of goodies...

or for amd -
asus a7n8x deluxe - $150 - Serial ata, onboard lan, 1394, RAID, lots of goodies...

Id personally go with the sinxp =D But its up to you of course :)

I appreciate all the fast responses, I am looking at newegg but I dont seem to see a board that supports 1394 USB 2.0 lan, audio, and video all in one, which ones do? also the barton 2500 looks nice but I cant seem to get away from the fact that it only runs at 1.83 Ghz. Now if I have to get a video card would you guys all say that a ti4200 is a good reasonable choice, for say about 150 ish?

The nForce2 with the IGP (8RGA+, NF7-M) have all those features (1394, USB2, LAN, Audio, Video).

The ASUS A7N8X deluxe has all you want. As for the Barton 2500, I know 1.83 is weanie, but that is why I said OC the heck out of it, you should at least be able to hit 2.2 ghz. Use A Vantec C7040 cooler, very quiet and very cool. For video Get a Radeon 9500 pro, should be able to get one for close to $150, and it will blow the doors off a ti4200.
Here is an except on the MOBO from newegg:

Model# A7N8X Deluxe Retail
Supported: Socket A AMD Athlon/XP/Duron (support AMD XP3000 "Barton")
Chipset: NVIDIA nForce2 SPP, nForce2 MCP-T
FSB: 333/266/200MHz
IDE: 2x channel ATA133
RAM: 3x 184-pin DIMM Sockets (PC3200/PC2700/PC2100 non-ECC DDR Ram)
Slots: 1x AGP (Pro/8X), 5x PCI
Ports: 6x USB(2.0),
Onboard Serial ATA: Silicon Image Sil 3112A Controller with 2 ports
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC650 6-ch w/built in amplifier,
MCP integrated 3Com MAC + Broadcom AC101L PHY LAN
Firewire 1394: 2 Ports MCP-T integrated IEEE 1394a + Realtek PHY 8801B Model#: A7N8X Deluxe Review by Gamepc.com

Just noticed you said on-board video, and NO it doesn't have that, and NO you don't want that, you need a good video card like the 9500 pro.

Edit: 9500 pro is $177, well worth it.

As of right now I'd go Nforce2all the way. Slap a Barton on that thing and you'll be good to go. Keep in mind the AMD chips are more effecient thantheir intel counterparts. I've seen people go as high as 3200+ on the 2500 Barton. AMD=cheap and fast.

fast and cheap?
AXP 2500+ @ newegg $163
P4 2.4B @ newegg $157

The 2.4B chips are all C1 stepping, and most (all that ive seen so far 15, but im not gonna say all) Overclock to at least 2.8ghz, the one im using now from newegg runs at 3.02ghz at default voltage.

I really don't see why you can't go either way.

AMD XP 2500...............$177 (retail)...........OC to 2.5Ghz, might need better HSF
Intel 2.4B.....................$163 (retail)..........OC to 3.1Ghz, still cool w/ stock fan.

"high end" mobo cost roughly the same also w/ IEEE1394 + Serial ATA Raid, 6 Channel Sound.

For example:

ABIT NF7-S...........$125 (nforce2)
ABIT BH7..............$92 (845PE) + Firewire Card + $19

Personally, I will go w/ Intel if I am going to spend more than $150 on CPU.

**I have both AMD and Intel System P4-2.4B@3.1 and XP1700@2.1Ghz (XP2600)

See the thing is I am looking for stability, so Im not really gonna overclock, I am kinda leaning towards intel justs because of the higher clock speed and the price comparason is so close,(this is going to a good friend so it will be hard to explain 2500 really = 1.83 but it performs at 2500!) what intel boards are stable and what DDR to go with it, I just need to make a decision on a good price vrs. performance setup?

Don't forget the nforce2 provides you with an ~80 audio chip essentially free. (assuming you go by the reviews which have put the audigy and soundstorm =)

think Im changing my mind may go with AMD Barton 2500 / ASUS A7N8X deluxe / ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV 64MB (do not see the 9500 pro at newegg) and I am kinda worried about all the ram issues with different Nforce setups what is the most recommended ram for this setup? I was looking at the kingston since it is on sale.

That will be a nice setup. There aren't really RAM issues... just don't buy generic... Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin whatever its all good memory.

Just an FYI, the price of the retail 2500+ Barton dropped to around ~$150 now (at NE and Googlegear), which was the previous range for the 2400+. I may have to pick one up myself now!

Aopen AK79G-1394
Firewire, USB 2.0, Integrated video
$135, no ship, $20 rebate
Link

Got the AK79D-1394, same board sans the onboard video. Works fine with Kingston PC2700 ram also from Newegg.
