Need a software for simulating a virtual LAN (vLAN)...

Hi guys..well you see I am doing this project in my uni..the topic is virtual LANs...Now I can make the presentation and everything, but I was thinking that maybe I can simulate vLANs through some software..... I have looked through the internet a little bit, and I have found some softwares, but they all seem to be very complex... I dont need any complexity..I just need (if possible) a simple software that can demonstrate vLANs.... is there any networking guru here that can help me out ? point out some software ?

Why don't you just use visio and make a visual representation of vlans? No need for it to be super fancy, just the basic ideas. (From what I know of them...they aren't that hard to explain)

well I am looking to just graphically demonstrate them... u know, like make 3 different vLANs, and add some machines to each vLAN...and then making them communicate....and then something to show that data is being sent/received only within vLANs...

visio is a good idea, but its just drawings...i want a simulation, not just the graphical display of the topology...

Basically doesn't exist. You could use chariot but it's expensive.

And in all honesty most all network is done with pictures to convey a concept. It's very visual and visio is the main tool of choice. Second only to a white board.

there are a few softwares that i am currently trying out, that allow you to simulate networks....such as:

Boson NetSim for CCNA
AdventNet Simulation Toolkit 6
SimpleAgentPro - SNMP Network Simulator

I am still downloading them though...lets hope that they are good softwares 😛

I guess I (we) don't understand your need for a physical demonstration....which will require several computers, which will show the same thing that a graphical drawing will. It is not a very difficult concept to explain.. 'each computer can only communicate w/ computers in its own vlan, but they are on the same switch' boom, done 😛

have a look at this image:

http://www.gambitcomm.com/site/products/images/ciscovlan.gif

it shows a vLAN simulation....some virtual computers are setup in a network, and then a vlan is defined...finally, you can send data across this virtual vLAN, and see the results of the simulation...

this is exactly what I am trying to do....the only thing is, I dont know how to implement this thing in a software, since i am not exactly a networking expert 😛
