I'd like to find a power supply unit that has at least 300W and is small in stature.

My goal is to make a laptop-like computer with ATX parts. I know, it sounds strange.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a power supply from a shuttle SFF would fit your needs?

That one is from shuttle's ebay store. It's only 250watts but I know the power supplies in SFF computers are usually beasts for the rated wattage.

Enermax's best SFX PSU has 270W with 20A max on the +12. I've seen more Watts than those two only in off-brand PSUs. If you want to chance it, http://www.compgeeks.com usually has some. If you are willing to PAY, you can get a 1U server PSU in that range, they are thin and not too wide, but they are long. Go to http://www.SparklePower.com and/or http://www.enhance.com.tw and look at their small form factor PSUs pages to see the size that might suit your project best and work from there. Once you've found the one you want, it's just a matter of finding a place to buy it. That can be 'interesting' in itself. ;)

A 300 watt reduced size power supply will be hard to find. Might find something in 200 or 250 watt size. If you buy a small case you might get something that is normally not availavle.

If you give your proposed list of system specs you might have better luck.

Might look at www.directron.com

They sell some smaller cases for Flex, Mini-ITX Etc.

There is one outfit that sells a Case that is smaller, but not too small but is quite expensive. It is designed for Micro-ATX Boards that also sells a 500w power supply with shorter cables:

www.falcon-nw.com

This is a really expensive case!

Antec sells an Aria case with a 300w power supply for around $100.00

I'm making a box that opens up like a laptop but has ATX-sized parts and has room enough for a 17" LCD screen.

Right now, I'll be fabricating with some of my old parts that I have laying around...

T-Bird 1.4ghz
768MB PC133 RAM
GF3 64mb
CD/RW
40GB HD

But I can imagine that my final template will be something like....

Athlon 64 3000+
1GB PC3200 DDR RAM
6600GT (either AGP or PCI-E; depends on MB)
DVD/RW
120gb HD

I'm trying to make the case (custom built) as small as possible.

Why not take an existing case and simply add a hinged 17" LCD on it?

I'm using this case for an HTPC and it's as compact you can get with a full ATX mobo: Photo

The case is 15 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 4 inches tall.
